Nikon 990 vs Sony DSC-505V

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I'm looking for a digital camera. Right now, there are two interesting me, 990 and 505V. It's hard to choice which one is better because one is Nikon and another one with Carl ziss lens.

I don't like the fact that the 505V has no viewfinder - other than the LCD on the back. I prefer a more traditional photographic metaphor to my equipment - so if I had to choose I'd go for....

...the Sony S70. Sorry about that - perhaps you already checked it out and don't like it - but I think it's a wonderful camera. It has a Zeiss lens, a great viewfinder (and LCD) and just plain feels good. It feels better in my hands than the 990 (I have very small hands with fat fingers. If you have considered it (the S70) - and ruled it out I'd then say the Nikon would be my choice over the 505V. Besides - I don't think you'll see the 505V in stores for a little while yet.

I was in the same situation but after reading several reviews, I ended up with the 990 for 3 main reasons: picture quality which rivals Carl Ziss lens simply because of the other related components within the camera itself; Nikon 990 w/ Lexar 128 Mb 8X USB ready can hold over 300 high resolution pictures and over 1,000 for low res(note $300.00 for the CF). plus with USB Jumpshot, transferring your pict to your harddrive is super fast and convenient (no need to hook up your camera and need no battery VS Sony media if you elect not to use the camera hookup, you will either need Photochute 3USB or Floppy adapter which requires button batt and won't last long.); Sony has no optical view finder so you have to use the LCD screen at all time which is not practical for outdoor use and it will run down your battery fast, but for 990 if you turn off the LCD you can get by a whole day for one set of batt. Have you looked at Casio QV-3000EX which has Canon lens and utilize 340 Mb IMB micro drive. Check also: http://www.steves-digicams.com/
