9:00 HDT: Ok, we are getting started a bit late. We've been having some minor problems connecting to the internet. Venla is underway and the first leg runners should be coming in.

With about 1 K to go on the first leg, Halden, Helsingin Suunnistajat, and Savedalen were up in the lead. TuS (not sure what that team is) was alone but ahead of a big pack that included Lidingo, Stora Tuna, Kangasala, and Tampereen Pyrinto (plus some other teams).

9:14 HDT: At the first exchange, Halden is in the lead by over a minute. Helsingin Suunistajat (which we're going to call HS to make typing easier) is second. Lidingo is close to the front.

Domnarvet is over six minutes back. Domnarvet is one of the favorites. They've got a very strong team....but, they're already a bit back. With three legs left, it'll be interesting to see if they can pull themselve back up.

9:24 HDT. The first leg runners finished almost half an hour ago. They are a few minutes ahead of the estimated times. The official Jukola web page does not yet have results posted. I'll keep checking and try to get an idea about how much of a lag they are having. Our friends at O News Cosmos are providing excellent coverage in a mix of Finnish and English.

The weather for Venla looks ok. It's cool, but not cold, at about 50 F. There is a chance of some rain. It will get a bit cooler at night for Jukola, but should stay about freezing. If it rains, it might be tough.

9:48 HDT. On the second leg, Halden is just less than two minutes ahead of a group of three teams that are close to each other (one of those teams being Lidingo).

I took a look at Halden's home page and discovered that they have their own Jukola page. It apparently just went on-line, making me wonder if it was inspired by Mook's OK does Jukola Y2K page.

A couple of interesting notes from Halden's page. Fraukke Schmitt Gran is quoted as saying she had a very good run (she won the first leg, so she better have had a good run). After one leg, both Domnarvet and Bakkelaget -- two potential winners and rivals -- were over five minutes behind.

I've got to get ready for the wedding, so I will not be able to participate today. I will check back tonight before I go to bed.

10:00 HDT: Halden is keeping the lead and it is still at 2 minutes.

Who ran the second leg for Domnarvet? Whoever it was, they went fast. Donmanrvet is now part of the pack that is two minutes behind. Lidingo is in that pack as well.

Still no official results on the Jukola page. But, O News Cosmos is doing a great job.

Thanks guys, we are sweating.... hard!

10:30 HDT: Halden's lead is gone. It disappeared early in the third leg and now Liedon Parma is in the lead. Halden is still right in it. The teams seem to be getting spread out a bit more. Domanrvet is 3 minutes back. Lidingo seems to have disappeared. Bakkelaget is slowly moving up, but I'm pretty sure Hanne Staff is not running and I think Bakkelaget will have a tough time.

Fritz is now on-line and we've been chatting. Where is Mook? He's probably saving himself for late night coverage of Jukola.

10:38 HDT: Big News -- O News Cosmos is reporting Halden is DQ'd. Apparently the third leg runner took the wrong map (i.e. took the map belonging to another team). The rules is, you're DQ'd.

O News Cosmos has a photo of the third leg Halden runner just starting. You can see the map. You can see that it is a third leg map (a big three on the back), but you can't actually see the team number on the map. Perhaps it is that the third leg runner gave the fourth leg runner the wrong map. Either way, Halden will be gone. It is unfortunate.

Sorry, Maria Hoffman GAVE wrong map...

10:46 HDT. Sorry, I gave some wrong info. It was not Parma in the lead, it was Lieto. Anyways, the last leg runners are on the course. Here is the order from O News Comsom:

: 1. Nydalens 2. Lieto +1.21, 3. Halden +1.22, 4. Bdkkelagets +2.51, Sundsvall +3.48, Orion +4.36, Domnarvets +4.38, Lidingv +5.27, TuS +5.36, Lieto II +5.43, Stora Tuna +7.08

Halden will be DQ'd. Bakkelagets is -- despite that rough start -- still in it. Lieto II is impressive (I'm assuming this is the second team from Lieto?). I'm always impressed by strong second teams. I never made the first team when I ran for Lidingo. But, I ran on a lot of second teams (some that even beat the first team).

Looking at the above results, I can imagine a couple of small groups forming. A small group can often go faster than a single runner. The last leg is about 7.7 K. So, there is plenty of time left for some changes.

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), June 17, 2000.

hum, testing testing.. =)

Lieto and Parma is the same club, the "real" club name is, Lideon Parma. TuS = Turun Suunistajat (spelling?)

Sorry, Maria Hoffman GAVE wrong map...

My mistake, Heikki. I was thinking about how we usually do the exchange at relays in the US. In the US, the outgoing runner typically picks up their map. In Scandinavia, the in-coming runner usually picks up the map and hands it to the next runner.

So, lets say you are the third leg runner for team 5. You finish your course and run up to a row of maps. You look for the map with the big number 5 on it (which will be for team 5 and the next leg), you pick it up, and hand it to your team mate. There is usually a little wall or fence separating you.

It is not as easy as it sounds. When you are an incoming runner, you are working really hard (at the last Jukola I ran in 1991, the run in was 800 meters long and had 17 contour lines of climb!). You are fighting as hard as you can and you might be in a crowd of other orienteers. You usually take a look at the number pinned to your O' suit, to remind yourself of your team number. Just reading the number on the back of the map you are supposed to pick up can be hard. Then you hand the map to the out-going runner. The outgoing runner should look at the back of the map and compare it to their bib number. But, at the same time, you're dying to sprint off and chase down your competition.

It is hard to be so careful. But, I bet the third and fourth leg runners for Halden will never get the wrong maps again. Its the kind of mistake you don't make twice.

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), June 17, 2000.

So, Lieto and Liedon Parma are the same. I'm glad I know that now. Thanks.

I also discover that Hanne Staff did run (Bakkelagets third leg). She had been injured (e.g. didn't start the Park World Tour race a few days ago because of an injury).

And at the radio control on the last leg, Bakkelaget and Lieto (aka Liedon Parma) are together in the lead. Halden is with them, but will be DQ'd. How sad. Imagine being fighting for the lead, maybe even kicking it in as fast as you can on the run in...only to be told your DQ'd.

Nydalen, Lidingo, and Orion round out the top five at the radio.

One Finnish team, two Norwegian teams, and two Swedish teams in the top five.

What ever happened to Lieto 2? My favorite Finish second team!

BIG NEWS -- the official Jukola results page has begun to post results. Better late than never! Results from the first two legs are now posted at: http://tulos.kalevanrasti.fi/.

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), June 17, 2000.

11:20 HDT. Lieto and Bakkelaget together with 1 K to go.

And, a quick look at the first leg results saw IF Thor's second team in 10th place. Did Magnus and Sanna go to Finland. If so, Sanna would probably be on IF Thor 2.

Finally, did you know that the Finnish word for the radio control is "radiorasti"?

11:32 HDT: From O News Cosmos ... "LIETO WON!! by 1 meter"

I need to take a break from sitting at the computer. I've got a couple of errands to take care of and need to do some training (cycling). I'll be back for Jukola later today.

A huge "Thanks" to O News Cosmos for outstanding coverage. The commentary and photos were great. You guys should take a rest to get ready to stay up all night!

-- Michael (mike_eglinski@kcmo.org), June 17, 2000.

i will stay up all night here in sweden and listen to the jukola radio @ http://extrem-das.nedecon.fi/DAS/audio/live.rm (realaudio) i can post some split/leg places for the teams if anyones interested.

-- peter (peter_larsson@gotmail.com), June 17, 2000.

Michael, we will run in Jukola, Heikki and Heikki 1st leg, Heikki and Heikki 3rd, and still one Heikki at 5th. So we will be very tired, but we still can do it with some whiskey.

-- Heikki Levonen (onewscosmos@hotmail.com), June 17, 2000.

Thanks for the Venla report. Been grouting the ceramic tile I've laid in the basement. Hope to catch more (live) of the Jukola. Any official word if Sanna ran?

-- mean gene (gmw@ukans.edu), June 17, 2000.

Gene, I don't think Sanna ran. I'm pretty sure she and Magnus moved in to their new house a day or two ago. So, I suspect they did not make the trip to Finland. I also took a quick look through the results and didn't see her name.

I also found that the runner for Domnarvets who moved her team up so much was Eva Jurenikova (sp?) who is, I believe, from Czech.
