Toon-related "nostalgia"

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

"Time remembered is grief forgotten". Or something.

Anyway, the worst moment in your supporting life. Discuss.

I think that the Cup loss in '74 is probably mine cos I was so little at the time that I honestly believed that cos the grown-ups had told me that we'd win, we would win, and I felt not only gutted to have lost but also that I could never trust the judgement or honour of a grown up again. How could they lie to me like this? How could they set me up for such a fall? Supporting the club has brought many losses since then but I'm not sure that any loss has been so painful since. You lot?

I recall sitting in my seat in the Milburn Stand, close to blubbing, after pretty well everyone else had left the ground after we had been beaten, I believe it was by Grimsby, just a few games after KK had been appointed Manager to succeed Ossie Ardiles.
We were in a real mess, there was no money for KK to spend, and SJH had prophesised bankruptcy if we went down.
At that moment I really thought we were going down to the old Third Division, facing financial Armageddon - MY Toon, the team I'd supported through thin & thin since I was a lad, looked doomed to final oblivion.
It hurt: really really badly.

I'm with Dougal on this one. 1974 Final was awful. It was the end of any idea that NUFC could ever win anything without a wholesale review of the club, which at that time just seemed impossible. And since it took 15 years from then, and things got even worse in between, it did seem "impossible" for a long time. Liverpool sliced us apart with team play that we hadn't the first idea how to combat. I've seen that team defended on the old Communicata BBS as being wrongly prepared. No. They were just awful. Too dependent on a limited approach.

NUFC 0 Cantona 1; Mackems in the play-offs; Chelsea in the semi...Agree about that Blackburn match too.

Weber's last minute equaliser in the World Cup of 1966 was an appalling moment - fortunately I didn't have to feel bad for too long.

So many 3rd or 4th round defeats in the FA Cup in the 60's in games against lower division opposition. The 0-1 vs Carlisle strikes me as especially bad. Ollie Burton missed a pen, and we trudged away from SJP thinking yet again, maybe next year ... (January to January is a loooong wait and it was never worth waiting for).

The 1974 final was a terrible disappointment. It wouldn't have been so bad to lose going down fighting but we just weren't at the match.

Anyway, as a Toon fan you learn to take all this stuff in your stride.

We don't care if the sun don't shine What the hell do we care etc etc

Fairs Cup 70 - 3-0 up against Anderlecht afetr losing the away leg 2- 0 and Nordahl or sombody like that scored - I was gutted - we didn't lose many in those days and I was wel in with a blonde who I only met at matches and nevr saw again after that day.

Almost as bad as Mackems penalty shoot out -but we did lose games then so it wasn't as bad.

At WHITE HART LANE IN THE 60`S, Hearing, seeing the vicious tackle by hard man Dave Mackay that broke Len Whites leg, that broke my heart, the greatest center forward ever to play for the toon.

The retirement of Tony Green who in my opinion in a good side would have been the greatest player to wear the stripes.

Josh - I remember that game. The only ever time I got me old dad to SJP. He was a "local" football fan - followed the Spartans everywhere, but I'd persuaded him to come with me. I even think he was quite proud to be seeing the Toon triumph in Europe - until that late goal. If they'd scored 10 mins earlier, we'd have won, but as it was, there was no time to get the winner. Thanks for the memory - a nice personal recollection.
