The BBC have lost the rights to Premier League highlights and these will in future be shown on ITV.

Poor old Gary!

Now that really is a pisser. I remember they lost the MOTD highlights before, and it was awful.

Question - Is it just me, or are highlights on a Sunday just not the same thing? Saturday night it's great, never miss it; Sunday, can't be arsed, it's all old hat by then.

Will Gazz do a Des & defect? There's f-all at the beeb to keep him. Can't see him doing the high jump finals at the Olympics...

Latest at the moment is that it is hoped the BBC will get the rights to FA Cup, Worthington Cup and England Internationals, so would be able to sustain some football output.

Deal: 66 live matches on Sky (increase of 6), 40 Pay-per-view on NTL Highlights on ITV

WHAT WILL I DO WITHOUT MY STAURDAY AFTERNOON LIVE FEED! More to the point, what will all my readers all over the world do without their 'virtual' pictures.

Am I missing something? Live feed? How? I mean .... How? Whatcha know that us mortals don't?

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

I work for the Beeb, and most Saturday afternoons, when I am working, can get a live MOTD feed from wherever the Toon are playing and do a 'running commentary' on this board.

Aha!

Oh no! This really is serious! What are we going to do ITK - can you defect please?! Or, can you please mention to the `powers that be` at the Beeb that I, as a licence-payer, give them my full permission to get right back in there and start bidding again! (:o)

We've got 12 months as the new deal doesn't start until 2001, but it is bloody bad news.......there are an awful lots of headless chickens in this building at then moment.

Highlight deal costs....we offered 40 million a year (#120m over the life of the contract), which was a 100% increase on the last deal of 20 million a year, and ITV steamed in with a loss leader offer of 61 million a year (#183 million total)

No doubt Desperate Lynam will be even more of a smug b@st@rd than he usually is when he is next on.

The up side of this is......can you really see ITV employing Mark Lawrenson.....even this cloud has a least a small silver lining!

Getting terribly close to being unable to justify the licence fee at the Beeb, I'm afraid.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Seems ironic 3 years to the day Lawrenson gets the boot from the toon his MoTD future is buggered. Bet he still accompanies Alan Green on Radio 5 Live.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Did you hear that pillock tonight?

Other bloke trying to make conversation to fill in particularly slow patch: "I wonder if Zoff will consider playing Totti and Del Piero together at some point."

Lawrenson: "I don't think he will." Then nothing. No explanation, no supporting facts, zip, diddly squat just as sure as Shearer being gone by Christmas. What a grade A waste of skin!

Serious stuff. Top story on the main Beeb news tonight. Maybe they'll show repeats of previous MotDs.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Ya know, I've been wondering why Mark Lawrenson is there. Muttering monosyllables keeps making me think there's something screwy with the satellite transmission. ;-)

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

I heard Lawrenson has a new job - starring in The Muppets. He's a class one tosser. The annoying thing is he gets paid good money for doing it - not to mention free access to top games. bah - I can feel my blood beginning to boil........nurse, more beer.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Hmmm.....I get free access to games, have spent half the games I've worked so far in the broadcast booth, speak monosyllabically(is that a word?) on microphones (stage fright in the extreme!)....and get paid loads of...errr, nothing. Hmmmm, I'm definitely doing something wrong with the Revolution. ;-))

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

I don't know who tolds you that Screacher.....but its not true.....he was actually sacked from the Muppets for making Waldorf and Stadler look animated and funny.!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Crikey ITK. Is that right? You mean I'm wrong? Damn. Maybe it was one of those "late night shows" on Ch5. Still a tosser!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

More likely one of those late night programmes on the adult Channel or Television X..........I reckon he has got a massive d**k....well he must have something to make up for being that frigging ugly!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

I agree with everybody's opinion of our ex defensive tactics coach, but if the choice was between listening to his crap or having my intelligence completely insulted by similar shit from big ron etc, plus adverts, give me Lawrenson any day.

Apparently ITV may be trying to poach Motty and Hansen. No mention of Barry 'In a previous life I was an 18th century courtier and wit' Davies or Clone Zone Lawrenson.

Personally, I think this is a shocker. Football on ITV is shit. I can't stand Tyldesly's scripted soundbites or thw way he pronounces 'another' to rhyme with 'bother'. The sets are garish, the presentation stumbling, and whenever anyone defects from the Beeb they always come a cropper. Bob Wilson out of BBC context was terribly exposed and I fear Lynam's going the same way. He's become self-parody. As for the pundits...Venison's got the Garth Crooks obsession of proving he's not a thick ex-pro. Speaking of which, please ITV, don't poach that wanker Crooks fer Chrissakes.

The thought of Bob 'Inane Grin' Wilson beeming at me every Saturday night is scary indeed. Can't imagine Hansen putting up with his sooooper poor presentation skills for long.

Also, would this mean an even later slot for the ITV MOTD? Don't they usually show 2nd rate films around 9.00pm that don't end until near 11.00pm? Or perhaps that's just the quality of Carlton TV.

Which brings me to a point (yes, I do have one) - will there be a tv region based coverage? The thought of seeing Arse, Chewsee and Spurs week in and out will do me nut!

Dougal

>>>>>Getting terribly close to being unable to justify the licence fee at the Beeb, I'm afraid.

Good point. Mind the licence fee is presently what - #100 or thereabouts? SKY is charging #30 per month to get exclusive rights to these things. If we want cheaper football on TV the only solution is to not subsribe to SKY in large numbers. Can't see it happening.

I have recently cancelled my licence fee to the BBC as I hardly ever watch anything and I certainly won't be subscribing to SKY so I can't complain whatever they do.

MOTD demise was the main story on breakfast BBC news this morning. They showed some highlights of previous MOTD clips. Of course they had to show that Bl**dy goal of Radford for Hereford again didn't they!!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

MOTD was cr@p anyway

I won't be crying any tears over it's demise. It always goes out at a stupid time of night, too late if you're in, too early if your out on the hoy. Bairns have to get up at 7am on Sunday if they want to watch it. I gave up on it this season. The presentation is lousy and I got sick of sitting through an hour and a half of dross (ie. other matches) just to catch a 15 second glimpse of the lads right at the end. Good riddance to the lot of them I say. I will never subscribe to Sky, it's pointless, they've got it down the pub.
