Answers

"I Wanna Be (500 Miles)" by the Proclaimers "If I Had $1 000 000" and "One Week" by The Barenaked Ladies "Mambo #5" by Lou Bega. I know it's overdone, but I always dance to it. "Toccata & Fuge in D Minor" and "I Can, Can You?" by Vanessa-Mae. And "Storm" and "The Devil's Trill", also by VM. "Mr Jones" and "Barbie Girl" by Aqua. "Summer Girls" by whoever. My friend gets it stuck in her head all the time, so I think it's funny. Hey Wendy, what are your thoughts on Abercrombie & Fitch?

There are lots more, but I can't think of them right now.

Oh yah, and "oh Holy Night" as sung by cartman from southpark. thats awesome "ew hewly net, the stuhs were bretly sheh nen"

Songs that make me smile

"Kyle's Mom is a Bitch" from South Park. "She has a girlfriend now" (yep that is soo hilarious) "Minimum Wage" by They Might be Giants "Paper Bag" by Fionna Apple

Uh I'm sure there's more but it's late.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen "Shake Your Rumpa" - Beastie Boys "When I Fall in Love" - Nat King Cole "I Wanna Be" - Proclaimers Lots of 80s music, I start waxing nostalgic. ("She's Got a Girlfriend Now" is pretty darn funny, I've got that along with When I Fall in Love and I Wanna Be on my mp3 playlist.)

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

'free bird' by lynard skynard - works every time!

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

The feel-good song of the month is "Steal My Sunshine", by LEN. Don't rush out and buy the CD though, the rest of it is pretty mediocre white boy hip hop.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

When I'm down and need a pick-me-up song nothing works better than the Alive 3 version of Deuce by KISS pumped up until the nieghbours complain oh yeah!!! Another song that gets me dancing and happy is I Wanna Be Like You by Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen. Totally different but so infecteous I just can't help myself. Go on, just give it one listen and you'll be hooked on it too. *feeling my dancing feet twitching* but I can't. it's after midnight here lol bed time for little aussie freaks lol. night

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

I hate being a jerk, but on Reel Big Fish's "She Has A Girlfriend Now", it's Monique from Save Ferris, not Gwen Stefani. I made that mistake when I first heard it, those two sound SO much alike.

"Senior Service" by Elvis Costello & the Attractions "Shady Lane" by Pavement "Motel Room in My Bed" by X

There a lot of songs that put me in a great mood, I'm not really one for depressing music unless I am really depressed; which is rare.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

"Send Me on my Way" - Rusted Root "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog" - "Three Dog Night" "Praise You" - Fatboy Slim "Stick Shifts and Safety Belts" - Cake "Circle of Life" - Elton John "Brown Eyed Girl" - Van Morrison "Rainbow Connection" - Paul Williams & Kenneth Archer

Lord, I could come up with hundreds. I know as soon as I post this, something else is going to pop into my head. This thread put me in a good mood, though. Thanks. ;)

I really dig the "hey everybody have you seen my balls? They're big and salty and browwwwwwwwn" ditty from South Park. Ditto the "Shaft" themesong. It must be an Isaac Hayes thing. I second the nomination of "Brown-Eyed Girl." Let's see, what else..."Rapper's Delight," (although I still don't yet know all the words. It's my summer goal to learn them) "Hateful," by the Clash, "Baby, I'm Yours" by Barbara Lewis, "One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces" by Ben Folds Five (any song built aroudn the lyric "Kiss my ass" can't be anything but good) and "L-O-V-E" by anyone. And who could forget "Debra" by Beck?

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Brown-Eyed Girl Van Morrison
Free Bird Lynard Skynard
Lie in Our Graves Dave Matthews Band
World in my Eyes Depeche Mode
Porcelain Moby
Temple of Love Sisters of Mercy
Last Goodbye Jeff Buckley I Want You Third Eye Blind
Just Like Heaven The Cure
Suck Nine Inch Nail
And almost *anything* from the early 80's. =)

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Cecilia! How the hell could I have forgotten Cecilia?! Man. It's not Monday, is it?

I thought of another one, too. Has anyone ever heard "Dead Puppies" by someone associated with Dr. Demento? It makes me giggle, even though it's morbid as hell. I can't help it. I know. Therapy is a good thing.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

"That's Life" and "Come Fly With Me" by Frank Sinatra. And "Something Stupid" by Frank and his daughter Nancy, because I always remember Wendy torturing me with it.

"Blue Christmas" by Elvis. God is that song dumb.

Actually, almost anything by Frank and Elvis, because it brings back Wendy memories.

Mushy, no?

Life Is Sweet - Chemical Brothers

Fools Gold - Stone Roses

Magnets Coil - Sebadoh

Sure Shot - Beastie Boys

And the one which will do it no matter where I am is Blur's 'There's No Other Way'.

Songs that make me feel invincible!!!!

And I thought I was the only one who got happy from listening to "Cecelia"! Wow:) I know its like, the world's cheesiest song, but I adore "Viva Las Vegas":) Always makes me dance:) I also love "Penny Lane" by the Beatles and "Pleasant Valley Sunday" by the Monkees. They are very fun to sing and clean to. Other happy songs are "Killer Queen" by Queen, "Dancing Queen" by ABBA (got a Queen theme:), "Road to Nowhere" by the Talking Heads (if only for the video), "Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog" by Three Dog Night, "We Got the Beat" by the Go-Go's, "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" by Cyndi Lauper, "Material Girl" by Madonna, "Come On Eileen" by Dexy's Midnight Runners (my fave 80's song), any Motown girl group from the 60's song, and finally, my favorite song of all time: "Summer in the City" by the Loving Spoonful.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

YaY realizing how much of y'all's happy music I have on my mp3 list, "Come On Eileen," "Love Shack," and "Cecilia" so far :)

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

Word to what Cindy said about "Steal My Sunshine." I like the song, but the album just sucks.

Others that make me smile:
"Boyz in the Hood" -- Dynatmite Hack
"These Are Days" -- 10,000 Maniacs
"Four Leaf Clover" -- Abra Moore
"Always Saturday" -- Guadalcanal Diary
"Laid" -- James

And if anyone out there has the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack, the cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love with You" by Lick the Tins is a guaranteed pick-me-up.

-- Anonymous, June 14, 2000

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

There are plenty more... But we'll leave it at that for now. =)

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Does anyone remember that song from a couple years ago called "Your Woman" by White Town? (("Well, I guess what they say is true, I could never be the right kind of girl for you...")) I know, I know... I think everyone but me thought it sucked, but it puts me in the best mood. The sarcastic lyrics, the beat... everything just lifts my little spirits.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Hey, I liked "Your Woman" also, although I wouldn't have thought of it in reference to this question...

Anyway, my partial list would include:

I also have to cite "Hell is for Children," by Pat Benatar. I wouldn't quite say it puts a smile on my face, but it always cheers me up immensely. Quite cathartic.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

anything Pixies, particularly "Geofrey" (with one F, Geofrey) and "Little Eiffel" off Trompe Le Monde and one off of Doolittle, although I can't think of the name of it. Ooh, "subbacultcha" (sp?) too. that's a good one.

Louis Prima, particularly "Angelina", "Baby Won't you please come home", and "Black Magic".

Iggy Pop--"lust for life". I hate that car commercial, but that beat sure does make me bop my head around and do a little jig when I hear it.

Operation Ivy--I think the song is called "Sound System". And "She's a Bombshell" off the self-titled CD.

Sebadoh-#3 off of Harmacy. I can't remember the name of it. Can you tell I don't ever look at the CD packaging? I just pop the CD in and lose the case, so I hardly ever figure out what the names of the songs are. Anyhoo, the song starts, "So you think you're in the middle of an ocean, stranded on an island of your own" Those who know the album will recognize the song, hopefully.

Beck--that Deborah song, that just cracks me up. I wanna get with you, and your sister...

Beastie Boys--body movin', get it together, paul revere (kind of sick of that one, but it's nice to hear now and then)

old r.e.m. Begin the Begin. Finest Worksong. Can't get there from here. I like singing along and laying on that thick, Southern accent in r.e.m.'s earlier stuff.

That's about all for now. Damn, now I'm at work and I can't listen to any of it. *sigh*

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

The Lick the Tins cover of "I Can't Help Falling..." is so kickass!

I forgot to list Mambo Italiano by Rosemary Clooney. I may have to order that Mob Hits Compilation off the TV...

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Jenn - I feel special that you wanted to make *MY* forum topic your first post. :) I can't believe you know "Little Bastard" - everyone I know is like, "Who? Ass Ponys? Huh?" Ditto on Cake's "I Will Survive" - I love it when he says "I should have changed that fuckin' lock." I also forgot about "Video Killed the Radio Star" - ((putting that down on my Napster download list)).

Heith - thanks for reminding me of those Letters to Cleo songs you mentioned. GREAT happy bouncy good-mood stuff.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

There are so many, mostly listed here already, but my current play-repeatedly-to-the-great-annoyance-of-my-husband is "Cartoon Hero" by Aqua. I totally dig the video too.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

The first one that springs to mind is "Bizarre Love Triangle", by New Order. I just can't sit still when that song plays.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

"Ain't Nothing Gonna Break My Stride", by Matthew Wilder.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

"It's Raining Men!" Hallelulia!

Many many songs by Weird Al, especially Polka Medlies.

"I've Just Seen a Face" by Holly Cole

Sting or Police songs.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Leigh Ann, the Mob Hits Compilation CD rules! We play it all the time, especially when my husband's Italian grandma comes over to make a pot of sauce! And Mambo Italiano is my favourite track!

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Erin ,

"Sebadoh-#3 off of Harmacy. I can't remember the name of it."

================>Ocean.

It also sucks if you mainly have cd's in your car as you never get to check out the title......so you are always like 'you know the track after the one which goes dah beep baa bish'.

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

My Sharona - The Knack
Turning Japanese - The Vapors
Your Kiss is On My List - Hall & Oates
I Want You to Want Me - Cheap Trick
Every Little Thing She Does is Magic - The Police
Particle Man - They Might Be Giants
Safety Dance - Men Without Hats

Heck, most songs from the 80's. They were so incredibly cheesy. *grin*

-- Anonymous, June 15, 2000

Ya. I love 'Turning Japanese' also, but the Liz Phair cover of it *really* rocks my world. Plus anything by Cake, The Offspring, Sublime, Pavement and the more upbeat stuff from The Eels.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2000

"Ma-nah ma-nah" - Piero Umillo (probably not spelt like that, but you probably know the Muppets' version anyway)
"Yummy, Yummy, Yummy" - Julie London (sounds like you're 14 and your best friend's mom is coming on to you)
Harley Davidson - Brigitte Bardot
Danny's Inferno - The Three Sons
Gopher Mambo - Yma Sumac
Powerhouse - Raymond Scott
and anything involving The Whistling Artistry of Muzzy Marcellino

My current good mood song is: "You're no Rock n' Roll Fun" - Sleater-Kinney

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2000

Oh, so many...

"Here comes the Sun"--Beatles

"Your my best friend"--Queen

"She's Lump"--The President's of the United States

Really anything from the 70's, and early 80's

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2000

"I'm Walkin' on Sunshine" is by Katrina and the Waves. Excellent song.

What about that Discovery Channel song? Isn't it terrible? Doesn't it make you want to dance?

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2000

this is kind of embarassing but...

"who's johnny?" by el debarge (from that movie, Short Circuit)

and -- uh...

pretty much anything by Brittany Spears.

-- Anonymous, June 16, 2000

Appleseed Cast, "Fishing the Sky" Aerialuxe, "Open" Hillary Step, "Refined, Regrouped, & Reassured" Reflector, "I Refuse to Mute"

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

this is my first post too! I thought about seconding everybody else's favorites, but I stopped listing individual songs when I got to the fiftieth one. let's just say that more than half of the songs already mentioned are in my all- time greatest Happy Songs archive... but I can't believe nobody's mentioned Tempted, by Squeeze, yet! just saying the word "tempted" makes me think of Winona Ryder and Janeane Garofalo cruising, singin' loud, and tossing a cigarette butt into Ben Stiller's car :)

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

I must confess. The theme song to Shaft puts me in a good. I mean really how can you be blue listening to "Who's the private dick who's a sex machine to all the chicks?" Others: Love Shack by B-52s 1979 by the Smashing Pumpkins Sabatage by the Beastie Boys The Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack Groove is in the Heart by DeeeLight

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

I have to agree with aforementioned "Soundsystem" by Operation Ivy.

Pretty much anything by the Abyssinians. actually nearly any rocksteady/blue beat makes me happy.

"Can I Say" by Dag Nasty

that track off the Black Sheep album, with the lines: "engine engine number nine, on the new york transit line, if the train goes off the track, pick it up pick it up pick it up" or most of that album (1991? what was it called?)

"Hand on the Pump" -Cypress Hill

"Champion DJ" sung by Top Cat, Congo Natty Remix '97.

"Her Jazz" by Huggy Bear

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

Can't believe I forgot to mention these...

Space Is Kind, "Dream" Electronimo, "Driving the Antarctica" Electronimo, "Blind Eyes Wishing for Blue Skies" Shallow, "Smile" Grovel, "Angels, Devils, and the Noises in My Heart" / "Valentine" TV 50, "Better" The Urge, "Getting Hectic"

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

OK.. I need to put a little background in here before I jump into naming songs.

Until I was eight years old, my family lived in this little cabin. The Cabin did not have electricity. (It really wasn't as bad as it sounds and I didn't know any different.) no electricity=no TV, right? We had two radios, one big "good" one and one smaller "bad" one. The smaller bad one used fewer batteries so we had to listen to that one except on special occasions (when we used the good one.) That was fine, except the small one had horrible reception. We only got one AM country radio station. And that was the music I was raised on. I am seventeen years old, and even now, when I hear certain country songs from that mid to late eighties period I have to smile. And sing. And dance. Those are songs that truly make me happy. It is a cross between Cabin nostalgia and childhood nostalgia.

Thus said, here are some examples of Cabin music:
---Fishing in the Dark, by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
---Song of the South, by Alabama
---Neon Rainbow, by Alan Jackson
---All My Ex's Live In Texas, by George Strait
---Ocean Front Property, by George Strait
---High Cotton, by Alabama

As much as I hate to say it, I love those songs.

Other happy songs include:
---Down by the Boardwalk by the Drifters
---What a Wonderful World, by Louis Armstrong
---Penny Lane, by the Beatles
---Jack and Diane and Pink Houses, by John Melloncamp
---Let's Get it on, by Marvin Gaye
---Take it Easy, by the Eagles
---Almost anything by Cat Stevens, AC/DC, or the B-52's
---Walking in Memphis, but I do not know who sings it. If anyone knows, let me know.

And now that I have admitted to liking all of these, let me go hide in a corner.

-- Anonymous, June 18, 2000

Marc Cohen sings Walking in Memphis. Cher also did a cover, but it's terrible. I can't believe I forgot to mention these guys earlier, but does anybody remember Dionne and the Belmonts? 1950's Do-Wop music. Best stuff to drive to. You can't sit still, even if you hate it.

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2000

The songs that always put me in a good mood are: "The Joker" Steve Miller Band "Dig Up her Bones" the Misfits "The Shining" the Misfits "Psychopathic" ICP "Run Like Hell" Pink Floyd "Welcome to the Machine" Pink FLoyd "Small Furry creatures gathering in front of a Cave" Pink Floyd

Songs that depress me are: "Fade to Black" Metallica "Wish you were here" Pink Floyd" "Freedom Song" Deep Forest "The Dance" Garth Brooks "One of My turns" Pink Floyd

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2000

Oh, Maxine. Oh. Not Britney. No "oops, I did it again." No "hit me baby, one more time." Oh, man. We'll forgive you eventually. :)

Oh, and... damn it, I can't remember your name... it started with an R and you mentioned something about living in a cabin... and I just have to agree with you that Fishing in the Dark is a great song. And don't let no one tell you different, yee-haw!

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2000

"You and me, going fishin' in the dark
Lying on our backs and counting the stars...

I loved that song!

-- Anonymous, June 19, 2000

"Now She Dances" by Robin Hackett--definitely!

You can actually download this song for free on MP3.com, too!

"Walk in Jerusalem" by Mahalia Jackson, truly one of the most ecstatic tracks of the 20th century.

Anything Madonna.
