Come on England!!!!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

Seen a few people are a bit apathetic on here re the Euro 2000 championships and thought I'd nail my colours firmly to the masts.

I'm 1000% behind England and Kevin and hope we win the cup. Anybody who can't enjoy a 3 week festival of fine football and the chance for three toon heroes to shine (musn't forget Pav) has to be missing something. Anybody didn't enjoy watching Mpenza's goal this evening? What's football all about eh?

Come on England, come on Al. If you're not behind the lads you don't have the right to moan if we lose or share the glory when Shearer scores a hat trick, its like not voting then moaning about the government.

Come on England!!!!!

tom,

My heart says ... "Engerlund, Engerlund": my head says ... "Phillip Neville? Holy mackerel".
Nevertheless, come monday night I'll be cheering them on as thought it's The Toon.
I'm really worried about AS's knee though.

Sorry, I'm not entirely with you. I used to be England through and through come big tournaments but something like 90% of England fans, notably those who travel with England and go to Wembley, are utter w....s. Sorry, but it's true. I haven't missed an England game at Wembley for years and I have seen nothing (apart from the feelgood games of Euro96) to make me think that we have anything other than the nastyiest, dimmest, worst national team supporters anywhere. Even if we win it, there'll have been enough cafes trashed and people hurt by English fans for the victory to be worth nothing. 80% of Wembley stadium booed during the Alf Ramsey silence a few months ago. That says it all for me. I only wish I could care more about England cos the lads in the team deserve so much better than most of their "No surrender" supporters.

Thats the thing though Dougal. I do love England through and through, and just because most of their "fans" are w*nkers doesn't diminish that in my book. I support England, not their fans. (Even if they are sh*te most of the time)Come on England...Come on !!!

My issue is that you aren't supporting a team, you're supporting a country and most England supporters make me ashamed to be English. And the other thing is, I hate most of the players so much that I can't be over-joyed when they score. Paul Scholes' goals don't count, I loathe the little p...k so much. Ironically, I'll still be at every England Wembley game and no doubt moaning about the Mexican wave - Stand up if you hate ManU- No surrenderding to the IRA, flag of Saint George waving muppets. However, I have suffered through this entire shit Euro2000 campaign, going to the games etc, so deeply buried there must be some affection.

ps. I hope I'm not coming across as being unpatriotic. It's just that I've left Wembley feeling sick for almost all of the qualifying games. Even KK was moaning about the Mexican wavers and Nazi saluters.

Don't give on England dougal just because of the poxy fans they attract from our wonderful Capital. This is a consequence of playing all our games in London to a complacent group of so-called supporters, instead of taking more games around the country and giving the real fans a chance to support their national team.

Spot on Clarky, that's my point. I am English even though I live over here now. Never had the chance to see England play "live and in person". It is about being "English" and I reserve the right tyo support them and/or slag them off if I see fit. I do see your point Dougal, but like Clarky intimated, all England home games at Wemberlee was not in the best interests of the real football fan, and as for the morons at away games, they aren't fans, they are louts who grab any excuse to go on a road trip and cause bother. They could indeed dress eleven monkeys in England shirts (I know, they do sometimes) and I would still cheer for them. It must be in the blood :-)
