Hacker Defaces a Government Web Site The Associated Press

HONG KONG (AP) - A government Web site was shut down Saturday after it was defaced by a hacker. A government statement said the hacker left two messages on the Web site of the Interactive Government Services Directory, which provides a investment guide and information about road traffic.

It did not say what the two messages contained.

Police were investigating the incident, which did not affect the Web sites of other government departments, the statement added.

Global: Hackers return to Hong Kong government services Web site

Agence France-Presse

HONG KONG (June 11, 2000 2:25 p.m. EDT http://www.nandotimes.com) - Hackers launched another attack on a Hong Kong government Web site Sunday, forcing officials to close the site down for the second time in less than 24 hours, a spokesman said.

The government decided to temporarily shut down the Interactive Government Services Directory Web site "to solve problems created by two defacement cases over the weekend," it said in a statement.

"We resumed service at 2 a.m. today after a defacement yesterday, but the web site was still subjected to further attacks," the government spokesman said.

Hackers attacked the site Sunday afternoon following an attack Saturday that forced the site to shut down for more than 10 hours.

"The other government web sites have not been affected," the spokesman said.

"The outward symptoms of the two attacks are similar with the home page being defaced and replaced by messages," he said.

The government shut down the affected home page on Saturday after the messages "Owned by the Crows" and "hacked by Analista" were found posted on the site.

Analista means analyst in Spanish.

Police were investigating the case, the government statement said.

The government successfully fended off two hacking attempts against its Web site last year.
