Squirrel causes morning outage

NEWS TRIBUNE

A squirrel caused approximately 2,600 residents of Jefferson City's east side to be without power for a little over two hours this morning.

According to Mike Cleary of AmerenUE, two 12,000 volt lines on East McCarty Street burned down.

Cleary reported a squirrel shorted out a pole-top transformer that serves the Sheltered Workshop on East McCarty Street. That's where the lines burned down.

"Most customers were back on by 9," Cleary said.

But it took until 9:45 a.m. to restore service to some customers near the failed lines.

"It affected the far east side of Jefferson City," Cleary said.

A number of customers called the utility to report the outage.

Cleary said automatic monitoring equipment also alerted repair crews to the trouble.
