UEFA tinkering again?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I read in The Telegraph on Saturday that UEFA are considering making a ruling where there must be 6 players from the home country on the field at any one time. Whilst this will b*gger up the likes of Chelsea, it looks like England will suffer again due to the fact there are so many scots, welsh and irish in the league.
Will it make the Premier League a poorer league?

But my home country is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, says so on my passport.

Yes but the last time, when there was the three foreigners rule (before Bosman) England was England and you had to have played here for a long time to qualify, I think Giggs was inelligible at the start for NH. The passport thing doesn't work for football as we have four different international teams

Cliff,

No such country or (even nation) as the United Kingdom - this is an administrative entity. Your nation is Britain, your country is (I assume) Ingerlund.

But six on the field at one time shouldn't be difficult- one on your side and five on the other.

Doubt if EUFA will be able to make this one stick - it just requires one Juve to threaten litigation for attempted restraint of trade or similar and they'll withdraw. Especially if the case is heard here in Italy ............. I can hear brown envelopes rustling already. Nepotism? That's ma boy!

Does that mean Le Tossier will be ineligable as he's a Channel Islander? And does this mean players from Monaco would also be barred? What about Catalans in Spain? Bretons in France? Geordies in England?

The list is inexhaustable - but, if it took 6 years for an EU commission to conclude honey is made by bees (oh yes) we're safe for a good while yet.
