Good camera for photographing items to list on eBay.greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread |
Hello -I am looking for a digital camera that would serve me well as I begin to list items on eBay. The camera would need a good zoom feature and the images would need to be very clear. What camera would serve that purpose....as economically as possible?
Please email the answer back to me.
Thanks....Deborah (ssdks@sheltonbbs.com)

Deborah:
If this is truly all you need to shoot then you needn't worry about getting a camera with a lot of resolution. A decent 640 X 480 camera would do perfectly for eBay pix. They also are going pretty cheap these days.
I would highly recommend looking at some of the older Sony FD models. These save their images to regular floppy disks - and that makes moving the images to your computer a snap. Some of the cheaper/older cameras use serial cables and incantations to get the images to your computer - floppies are simple and effective.
Look for a Mavica FD-7, FD-71, FD-73. Check out eBay - you'll find lots of them (do a search for FD-73 and FD73).
You should consider a couple of other things too:
- Lights - Go to Wal-Mart or Home Depot (or their ilk) and get 2 tungsten work lights. These will cost you about $10 each. For a few extra dollars you can get them with stands. These aren't photographically color ballanced - but they don't need to be for digital photography.
- Background - Also at Wal-Mart you can get some wide rolls of colored paper. Get a white roll, and a dark roll - and use this as a background. Roll it out on a table and then up and over books, a box - anything. For photographing smaller objects this makes a nice background. Choose a background color that provides good contrast. For larger objects you're on your own.
- A small - cheap tripod is also very helpful.
Lighting is key. Poorly lighted subjects are just not as attractive and well lighted ones. Experiment - try some backlighting, spot lighting on the backdrop, etc. It's digital you can afford to waste the film!
This should be most of what you need - besides the products you want to sell. - good luck
