How do I capture at 480X480 for SVCD creation?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I was wondering, I have one of those TV Tuner/Capture cards. I want to capture directly at 480X480 resolution (in AVI format or MPEG2 format, doesn't really matter although capturing to MPEG2 would be prefferable). I really don't have the time to capture at 640X480 and resize to 480X480.

Is there any kind of codec or program that allows me to do that? Perhaps a plugin for Premier or MediaStudio Pro 6?

Thank you

You can use VirtualDub for that kind of video capture.

Just when indicating your video capture resolution size choose "CUSTOM" and enter 480x480 for NTSC.

Hope this helps you.

I have read that VirtualDub together with PICvideo's MJPEG codec work but I have no experience trying this technique. BTW, which TV Tuner/Capture card are you using and are you happy with it? I have a G200 Marvel but I'm thinking of adding a TV Tuner card for RGB captures (Marvel RGB is flawed) to get better quality captures from VHS sources.

Thanks.

>> (Marvel RGB is flawed) What is flawed in the RGB capture of the G200?

I have a Marvel G400-TV and would like to know if I am experiencing this flaw.

Hi KG,

I work with PAL video and drop frames like nobody's business in RGB mode. I didn't realise it was happening until I captured using VirtualDub instead of VCR Remote. A trundle over the boards at the Matrox Users Forum reveals there is indeed a bug in PAL RGB capture at least. Here's a taste:

"RGB is unusable (PAL) because of known bug when captured video has 20.88 fps without dropped frames reported. It does not depend on color depth or resolution. Ive tested 30sec = 750 frames (PAL25). Resulting captures always contains 625 frames without dropped frames reported."

and this...

"RGB 24 mode captures with MATROX card is done by CPU-based conversion of YUV data to RGB format. This increases the data rate by a factor of 1.5 with actual reduction of the amount of information in the frame (6 bit presision for each color channel instead of 8 bit). Furthermore, RGB24 capture mode uses single field of TV signal instead of two,and interpolates it to maximum size of 640x480. This mode is a fake imitation of true RGB both fields per frame uncompressed video."

Check it out for yourself...

Cheers.

Frank.
