"....now that Y2k is over", Cap'n Dave ponders "Identifying the Next Threat "

greenspun.com : LUSENET : TB2K spinoff uncensored : One Thread

Why Bother worrying about "an issue"? Why not just "prepare"? Well, that mightn't be too good for the Sales Department would it?

Don't worry, Cap'n Dave, you can always turn to Brer Gary of the Dark if you need "a new issue".

Identifying the Next Threat

Those of us who like to be prepared generally have scenarios in mind for which we are preparig.

Now that Y2K is over, what should you be preparing for A nuclear attack or accident? A hurricane or tornado? Biological warfare? Long-term power outages this summer? Terrorism? Inflation and depression? Earthquake? Fire? Unemployment or disability? Identify theft? An oppressive government?

If you only knew what potential disaster you would face next, it would be easy, but since none of us have a crystal ball, we recommend that you prepare broadly enough to cover a range of potential disasters, mishaps and emergencies. This way, you can improve your ability to survive any disaster and come out of it better off than the general population. For starters, read Captain Dave's Survival Guide and tune in this summer for a new, expanded version.

Gas Prices Drop, but so Does the NASDAQ. Gas prices are dropping, finally, and the $2 a gallon rate by summer is doubtful anywhere outside of California. Still, it was a scare for most consumers. If you were low on heating oil and had to pay $1.89 or more, you know how easy it is for a shortage to strike.

Lower gas prices should mean lower inflation, and hopefully the Fed will not rush to raise rates further. But can the NASDAQ and tech stocks withstand a dip of 20 percent? Will our confidence in the economy withstand a market that hits 5,000 and then drops close to 4000? OK, so it's an election year, and markets are supposed to go up in an election year, but do you want to really count on this clichi? We recommend that you prepare for inflation, recession, depression and unemployment as aggressively as you woul for a natural disaster.

A Final Note

The Y2k bug may turn out to be a flash in the pan. We all may end up with egg on our faces and feel a little silly at making much ado about nothing. So what? If this is the case, every grocer, outfitter and surplus store owner will consider you a friend and you will have helped stimulate the American economy by billions of dollars used to purchase goods and equipment. That's not such a bad consolation prize. I won't mind looking silly at all. I've had a lot of practice my entire life.

On the other hand, if we don't help to prepare the nation, we may wind up as bad as everyone else, DESPITE all of our own personal preparations. We have nothing to lose in this venture, and everything to gain. Think about it, then do something.

Captain Dave's Y2K Guide Very comprehensive and fairly objective.

Start your food storage on $10 a week If Old Mother Hubbard had had a food storage program before she went to her cupboard her poor dog would have gotten his bone. Given the fact that her cupboard was bare it was probably because she didnt have the wherewithal to fill it. Finding the resources to put food by against troubled times is a common problem, but it is solvable, even for those of us on tight budgets. In fact, over the long term, the food storage program you start now will save you money. It is like starting a savings account. You earn interest through greater savings in your grocery budget.

With commonsense planning, you can survive hard times This article, I hope, will help you prepare for any eventuality, whether its the Y2K Bug, a major economic collapse, an earthquake or hurricane, or even a death in the family that brings on hard times for you personally. WHAT'S NEW- Michael Hyatt's current Y2K news reports. This page is updated weekly. There are many web sites that provide "clipping" services of all the latest Y2K news. The Year the Earth Stands Still, by Gary North. At 12 midnight on January 1, 2000 (a Saturday morning), most of the world's mainframe computers will either shut down or begin spewing out bad data. Most of the world's desktop computers will also start spewing out bad data. Tens of millions -- possibly hundreds of millions -- of pre- programmed computer chips will begin to shut down the systems they automatically control. This will create a nightmare for every area of life, in every region of the industrialized world. Super scary article for ya.
