PCMCIA to SCSI

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

My scanner is scsi2 -- which works fine with the desktop at home. Laptop (what I use at the photo lab -- work) has usb/parallel/and PCMCIA slot. I thought I read oif a PCMCIA card that has a scsi(2?) interface connector -- so I can get input from the scanner. Is that so? Anyone use one / have recommendations? The scanner is a UMAX Powerlook2 and I cannot afford to replace it with a comparable new model with a usb connection. Thanx --

Yeah we sell the PCMCIA to SCSI2 adapters at CompUSA, I think they run about $100-$129, I'll have to check next time I'm working. You can try to find it on compusa.com to at least get the name of the company. I haven't tried them personally but its exactly what your looking for.

I have an Adaptec SCSI card that slips into a PCMCIA port. I have used it with my Minolta Scan Speed slide scanner, a flatbed scanner, a ZIP drive, and a CD-ROM burner. It has given me zero problems.

I amnot sure what they go for these days, but it should be pretty reasonable. I am not sure what model I have (don't want to power down to pull it out), but it is over 3 years old.

I am using it with Windoze 95.

Its cable (inlcuded) has a low density (telco-50 type) plug, so you will probably need to get an adapter to the more common (nowadays) high density or D-shell connectors. You can get the adapters at most computer stores.

The above Q&A are THE reason I keep checking this site! I had the same question as Tom and "The Clubmembers" responded with a solution. Tom, I'm right behind you to buy one of these interface devices!

Have a look at Ebay. I just checked and they had a bunch of pcmcia scsi/scsi2 adapters on auction under the keywords "pcmcia scsi".

I have one that came with a 20X Panasonic CD-Rom I bought through Ebay. I then bought a SCSI2 to SCSI adapter from www.dalco.com (get their catalog) for ~$12 to connect the mini 50 pin connector on the pcmcia card's cable to a standard 25 pin scsi port on my scanner or an external 540MB removeable media NOMAI disk drive. It has worked like a charm every time I've used it. If you don't have a cd-rom for your laptop consider that I bought my 20X cd and the card for around $100! Not bad at all when you consider I get double duty from it.

Good luck!
