The reactor at the Kalinin plant in Tver, 100 miles northwest of Moscow, was shut down automatically Monday afternoon. Emergency Situations Ministry spokesman Col. Nikolai Bobr declined to specify what the problem was, but he said it was repaired and the reactor was restarted Tuesday morning.

He said no radiation had been released

MOSCOW: An automatic safety system has shut down a nuclear reactor at a power plant outside Moscow, a Russian energy official said on Tuesday.

The shutdown occurred at about 2 p.m. (1000 GMT) on Monday at the Kalinin plant in Tver, 160 kilometers northwest of Moscow, said Andrei Polous, a spokesman for the state company Rosenergoatom.

He declined to say what the problem was. A statement from Russia's Emergency Situations Ministry said no radiation was released and that the problem was being repaired, the Interfax news agency reported.

The plant has two Soviet-designed, VVER-1000 reactors.(AP)
