advice for a new owner

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. I have had many cats before, but because of now non existant allergies, I have gotten rid of all but one. she is 13 years old, and very territorial. I dont know how she will react with a new kitten in the house. I am getting the kitten from a friend of mine on sunday for free, so advice is needed PRONTO!!! thanks!

Do NOT put the kitten and the adult cat in the same room for at least a week, maybe even two. And when you do, monitor their interaction. A 13-year old cat will naturally resent the "intruder" into her space. They must be introduced gradually.

Give the kitten its own room with plenty of toys, food, and water. Put a screen or other barrier at the door. Allow the older cat to sniff through the screen so that she gets used to the kitten's odor. It may also be a good idea to rub the kitten with a sock or towel, and then leave the cloth near your older cat. One of the things that worked for me was putting the "intruder" cat in its carrier and keeping the carrier near me. The older cat can then safely sniff the newcomer and you don't have to worry about any cat fights. Don't be surprised if your older cat hisses a lot. She is trying to assert her dominance. Some people suggest trading places with the cats. That is, put the older cat in the kitten's room for a while, while you put the kitten in the older cat's space. Then put each of them back in their original space. Don't give up easily. It will take a few weeks until the older cat stops feeling threatened. Someday, you may even find her washing the young kitten and otherwise nurturing it. Just be very watchful for a few weeks and never leave the two cats alone without you being present. Good luck!
