Radiohead: what's the best album?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Squishy : One Thread

Hey Radiohead fans!

I've got OK Computer and I think it rocks, and I want more, but I'm poor, so i can only buy a few CD's at a time. (And damn, don't you think CD prices are just through the roof? I mean, sixteen to twenty bucks can buy you a lot of shit, yo.)

So can somebody give me a breakdown of which is their better stuff, so I know what to buy next?

The Bends is indispensable. I listen to it probably 3x a week, and that is saying something.

Indeed, make The Bends your next Radiohead purchase. Pablo Honey you might be able to find used. It's not as good as the latter two, but it's still got some cool stuff on it and definitely is important to the Radiohead fan to know and love. Or something. Heh.

They don't really have anything else out besides EPs (also worth the money, actually) and a couple videos (Meeting People Is Easy, a documentary kinda thing that's interesting and has snippets of live songs, and 7 Television Commercials, seven music vids, and their vids are damn cool).

I've got an mp3 cd collection of b-sides, live stuff, alt. versions of stuff, etc. Very happy. They should have a new album this fall, by the way. woo!

Don't go near 'My Iron Lung' ep. It actually sucks. I'm a huge Radiohead fan and I'm saying that. There's only about two good songs on it. So there. Wahey! New Albumn.

Check the website. www.radiohead.com

Oh yes. New Radiohead fan in the house...

The Bends is a definite buy. The EP "Airbag/How Am I Driving?" is good too, if only for like three songs. There's also and EP of My Iron Lung that you can probably find (I ordered it -- Pamie recommended getting it at Best Buy on the cheap)...

The videos are really good. I have "Meeting People is Easy" on DVD and it's AMAZING. The sound is fantastic. It's even got a DTS audio track that's a joy to listen to.

Pablo Honey is good, too, but a lot of their b-sides and more recent unreleased tracks (that you can download from a lot of fan sites) are much more interesting, especially stuff that's supposed to be on the next album. Right now, my favorites are "How to Disappear Completely and Never Be Found," and "Knives Out."

Here's a Web site that has a really good audio archie to check out: http://www.disconnect.net/psfacsimile/

And I bet they tour later this year in the U.S. in support of the new album.

Yesterday, 93.7 (Austin TX radio station) was playing 'Creep'. I was hummin the words right along, drivin' around being all happy that radiohead was on the air, when the lyric "I wish I was special, you're so F****** special" came on. I stoped, and just started at the radio. Then, I raised my hand through the roof and yelled "Yes!" and started dancing. I loved that the radio station had the cohanas to play the uncensored version. Then the volume got really loud, then really soft, and the song started over and it was the censored version. Friggin radio stations. I laughed at their foul-up though.

Just thought I'd share, -eric

a friend gave me a radiohead mix tape a few months ago. my only prior exposure had been 'creep.' regardless, i became absolutely obsessed with the tape and i still listen to it about twice a week. unfortunately, he neglected to list the song titles. i'm trying to find out what album 'killer cars' is on. (i only know the title cos i found the mp3.) help!

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Killer Cars is a b-side. It's not on any of their albums proper. There's info on EVERY b-side and unreleased song (just about) at www.followmearound.com -- I really like the accoustic version of Killer Cars. Follow Me Around is really good too.

No question -- get The Bends. Best album. Love it.

Pamie is right on - Best Buy is the cheapest store to get CDs. I wonder if they have a website to order CDs from?

Definitely get The Bends. I was looking for a B-Sides album after finding all these B-sides songs on Napster. They are great! Omar must be my biological brother... love "How to Disappear Completely and Never be Found", too. Not to mention the acoustic version of "Banana Co."

The Bends is a great CD. No doubt. Absolutely brilliant stuff.

OK Computer is pretty fabulous too, but it works best when you just put it on repeat and let it play over and over and inhabit the background of your life for a while. It likes to live there.

I don't have Pablo Honey, but I really like the Airbag/How Am I Driving EP. "Palo Alto," "A Reminder," and "Polyethylene" are great, great stuff.

www.half.com is an awesome site to buy used cd's, books, and, video's. I know I've spent way too much money there. You buy things just like @ amazon.com, I've had real good, and fast service there.

Actually, I think "OK Computer" is the best one. Heard "The Bends" and thought that the best songs were the ones released as singles, didn't care so much for the non-single songs. Haven't heard "Pablo Honey" in its entirety but what I've heard (other than "Creep" [NB: the uncensored version gets played on Triple J all the time; for Triple J, see obscure bands thread]) hasn't inspired me to hunt it out. "OK Computer" is the only one where I like practically all of the songs ("Fitter Happier" notwithstanding).

Wow, there's another Luna here now! I'm going to have to agree with her and say that the next best Radiohead album to OK Computer would have to be the Airbag/How Am I Driving EP. I'm surprised so many people have mentioned it so far as I am the only person I know who owns it. I really enjoy the song "Polyethylene" especially.

hmm okay, I didn't read the whole thread here, but I must say I'm the biggest radiohead fan. well, err, I do own 11 albums and they only made 3 real albums!! most are eps and imports and bootlegs. my favourite to listen to is my san francisco bootleg but with real albums that you can buy online or maybe in stores, try the my iron lung [import]. it has permanent daylight and the accoustic version of creep!!! aaah it's really cool. trickster is a cool song too. you'd love it I'm sure.

[side note] my cousin, lindsey still has it..damn. I miss it. I hope to get it back soon or I'll just keep listening to my san francisco bootleg. hehe. it has trickster on it. woo!

okay, I just read evil will's comment. argh. it is good! maybe I'm just too cool of a fan and love all their stuff but I did love it...argh.

-- Anonymous, May 31, 2000

oh yeah, if you want live bootlegs of radiohead music like I mentioned the san francisco one, go here.

I also love the rarities one. it does have 'how to disappear completely and never be found'and my personal favorite 'motion picture soundtrack'.

I got good service there also. it did take me awhile to figure out how to order though. ah well. good stuff if you're a big fan.

And for the real fans (I don't count myself as one), check out Thom Yorke doing the vocals on U.N.K.L.E.'s 'rabbit in your headlight'. It is increadible. Listened to it over and over and over. I haven't got it with me right now.
*mental note to self: play song tonight when I get home.

-- Anonymous, May 31, 2000

Oh, no... you mentioned "real fans." That's it. Now I'm remembering all that time I wasted on Usenet. *shudder* That's a dangerous phrase, one that all too often translates to "rabid, deeply obsessed devotee," and those who fall into that category tend to be far more annoying than their transient counterparts.

But yeah, "Rabbit in your Headlights" is such a cool song. Cool video, too.

I (heart) Radiohead. I yearn to see them live again. I will actually purchase their next CD instead of mulling over the idea while playing the mp3s my anonymous fellow Napster user had available for download. Mmmm. But none of this "real fan" stuff, please.

Thanks guys!

You have proved my faith in the power of the interenet, for even the smallest of questions. :P

So sad to hear that there are only 3 published albums. Easy on the wallet, though! MP3 is not an option for me, as I don't own a computer - I feel like a freak in the land of the computer-enabled.

Freak, not geek!

Thanks though. Pamie's forum rules!

Welcome to the Radiohead bandwagon, Angela. Just one thing- Thom is my boyfriend. Mine. You can have Jonny. Oh, and on-topic, The Bends is the superior CD, IMHO.
