U.S. condemns Fujimori's win in Peru

Peru's President Alberto Fujimori celebrated winning a third consecutive term Monday, in an election boycotted by international monitors and condemned by the United States.

The U.S. called Fujimori's "regime" a serious threat to Latin American democracy. A State Department spokesperson said the U.S. did not see the election as valid since Peru refused to accommodate international observers.

International monitors wanted to delay the election, which they called undemocratic, because of glitches in vote-counting computers.

During the first round of the presidential election April 9, he came from behind to win 49.9 per cent of the vote a rebound that prompted riots in the streets.

People accused him of fraud, since the number of ballots cast wound up exceeding the number of voters by more than 1.4 million.
