when can I bring my kitten home?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Maine Coon Cats : One Thread

We've recently purchased a beautiful MC baby boy. We've been doing a lot of research about this wonderful breed online. Mentioned numerous times on numerous pages is that mc babies should stay with their mommies for 12 weeks. Why is this? We're dying to bring our little guy home, but we don't want to do it too soon, harming him somehow. He's 6 weeks old now. Help! Thanks for your time and opinions.

I speak from personal experience with my answer. My niece brought home a purebred kitten--a "Ragdoll," and he was nine weeks old. He had a fatal disease called "FIP" which, once contracted, the cat has zero chance of survival. He was barely 2 months old and she had to put that little baby to sleep. She was very devistated to say the least. Kittens have a better chance of having something like this come out by the time they are 12 weeks old; we were told. The breeder should have known better--any kitten that is brought home before 12 weeks of age is very muched stressed. So, do yourself and your boy a favor, be patient until the 12 weeks is up.
