I'm about to purchase a CP990, and I was wondering if my old SB-22 speedlight is compatible with this camera.

I use both an SB-23 and an SB-26 with my 990, so I would assume that the SB-22 would work as well. However, you do have to get a special cable to connect the flash unit and the Coolpix. I found it VERY worthwhile getting Nikon's flash frame/extender (whatever they call it) and it's relatively reasonably priced (about $50). It includes the cable and once you mount the flash and the Coolpix, you are GUARANTEED no more redeye.
