Granted, this is like getting all the netmeg in the same bite of the pumpkin pie. Gagsome. But these weren't trolls -- it was simply impossible to parody the more virulent doomers, since they did that to themselves. And Y2K Pro could produce literally hundreds of these compendia from the old TB2K without ever once repeating himself. Consider that he hasn't regurgitated even ONE personal attack!

Also significant (though you can't tell from this list) is that such outbursts were almost invariably accepted by the less adamant majority, and often enough people expressed support for such opinions, albeit in less fanatical terms.

Most important to me is that this post reflects much of the foundational mindset against which those who really *were* concerned about ill-behaved software were obliged to contribute. Imagine the difficulty of addressing questions of actual computer failure modes, repair and recovery options, technological resiliancy, etc. against this backdrop of vitriolic hatred, venom and spleen.

Is it any wonder that ex-doomers are so unseemly eager to move on, or so ready to ridicule ex-optimists for their presumed unwillingness to let go? Does anyone really believe that such people would be so enthusiastic about "moving on" had they been even half right? Is it any surprise that such people either locked themself into a forum where their victims could not speak, or just vanished altogether?

What Y2K Pro is pointing out is that y2k brought out the very worst in many people, who are now trying very hard to pretend they didn't say these things, and who aren't willing to face up to them. But I suppose that those capable of reflecting on their behavior wouldn't have been those exhibiting the behavior in the first place. Those who prefer to "move on", who prefer to ignore rather than learn from this kind of insanity, truly "Don't Get It."

It has been a long time since I bothered to post this list - a list repeatedly deleted on the old forum (for those that were around...)

It had not occurred to me that repeating this dirge of hate would in any way besmirch the memory of those who served - nor the freedoms and ideals many died for. If I have offended anyone, I do apologize completely and without reservation.

This list is not definitive and was not written by "trolls", but rather by indignant Doomers convinced of their righteousness and of the "end times" that were sure to follow. Any folks who apologized after rollover were taken off the list.

If I had the time or motivation, this list could have been a lot longer and a lot nastier, let alone the personal hate mail sent to my hotmail address which I never included as it depresses me even to look at it. For the most part, the folks who mad these remarks and the folks that supported them spend blissful days over at sleazy. These views were obviously not that of the majority Doomer community - but the majority rarely criticized those who made such astonishingly ugly remarks. I view it as a mirror being held up to those he quotes who might still be around reading, and a cautionary tale for those of us who might be tempted to take our passions beyond reasonable bounds.

I'm glad you posted this Pro. For as we all know, to forget past history is to repeat it. I'm really sorry to say that I was one of those who, although I hated these posts, didn't have the guts to stand up and say as much as I should have. When I did speak up, I got slammed so much on that forum, that I have to question my own good sense for even staying there. But then, of course, I have to question my own good sense for falling for all the FUD too.

It seems that many who want to move on, are those who were particularly vocal about doom and gloom, or else they've vanished totally. I, for one, will never get over feeling like the fool of the century.

Thanks Flint, for your posts that answered the detractors to Pro's post so much better than I could.

And as long as I live, I'll never forget the hate and verbal abuse of the doomers and nut cases. It does have a chilling effect on people who know they should speak out, but don't.
