You should know by now.....bad name to put into the board while I am around Dougal........

Where abouts in High Heaton, which street, born and brought up there

Not sure, ITK. I was sent some particulars of a house there by Pattinsons. It looks like a really nice gaff. Is it a safe area? Also, if you know anything about Fawdon, I'd be grateful. The other stuff I've been sent is very City centre (which is fine as well but I'd like to assess my options).

Heaton is probably one of the consistantly safe areas in the Toon....I'd be interested to know which streets the houses are in. Some of High Heaton is ex-council and the rest is 'private' housing as it were, the ex-council are normally pretty big for reasonable prices, whereas the 'private' have often been over priced for the area.

I wouldn't fancy Fawdon too much to be honest....

Are you looking to buy or too rent?

A mate of mine is looking to rent out a place on the Quayside.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

ITK, I'm looking to buy longterm but think I may rent for a year or so and I'd be delighted with anything on the Quayside. Do you know how much he wants and when it will be available? The road in Heaton is Ivymount.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

I'm not sure how much or when, but I will find out and let you know ASAP, he may well have already moved out.....he has bought the Highlight Lighthouse at North Shields and is doing it up to move in...the flat on the Quayside is right in the middle and two floors above a pub!

Ivymount Road is in a nice area, back of St Gabriels Church and the Corner House, it is Grant/Sting territory and just around the corner from where the besainted JET lived.

One problem with Heaton is that it's a bit far from the Metro. You're also some distance from the pubs - apart from the Corner House.

I used to live round the corner from where you are looking - Alexandra Road. Nice area - Heaton can be a bit studenty (to say the least), but that area is almost suburban.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Your mate's place sounds brilliant. Perfect in fact. I'm looking to spend weekends and holidays there as well as longer weekends and things. Do you know how many bedrooms etc it has? The Heaton place sounds lovely, too...

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Thanks, Chevy. Any views on any parts of Toon would be brilliant. Currently, Blackfriars/Charlotte Mews keep coming up but I'm fairly happy to go anywhere that has good Metro communications and is safe.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

It's two very large bedrooms and the living room/dining room is absolutley bliddy enormous......I don't know if it's still there, but he did have the clock face from the old demolished church round the corner on the wall at one end of the room.

I have E Mailed him, and copied you in, so hopefully he will reply soon.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Wow - sounds fantastic! Thanks for your help, ITK.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Chevy is right about the Metro links in Heaton, they are pretty much non existant, but with all the busses from the coast passing the end of the road and going directly into the Haymarket, its not exactly remote either.

The Alexandra Road/Cartington/Tossen/Warton Terrace area are pretty much student area's, but the side of Heaton Road you are talking about is completely different, again as Chevy said, it is distinctly suburban.

If by Blackfriars area you refer to the bit around the end of Byker Bridge/New Bridge Street/Shieldfield, don't for gods sake touch it with a twenty foot barge pole....that area was a slum when it was first built.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

These are the redeveloped mews buildings on the old wall - about 30 secs to Stowell Street, I minute to the Strawberry and 2 mins to SJP....

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Blackfriars - there has been some development between Stowell St. and the road off Newgate St. where the Mayfair used to be ITK. The restored remains of the old Friary are in the middle. It's not bad at all.
The part of Heaton ITK is describing is quite nice Dougal with some nice property - close to Armstong Park, St. Gabriels Church, the Peoples Theatre, and The Corner House - something to suit all tastes.
Ample bus services nearby should compensate for remoteness from the Metro.

ITK,
I never knew Wor Jackie lived in Heaton? Whereabouts?
My Uncle lived in the house next to the St Gabriels vicarage in Holderness Rd. until he died a couple of years ago. He was a Toon fanatic, and never mentioned JET's residence nearby to me, which suggests he didn't know either. I'm curious.
To be honest, I didn't know Sting was a Heaton lad either. I thought he hailed from Wallsend or Walker.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Yeah....got the area now.....it is right on the edge of the toon beside SJP....I should have known really, my brothers used to have a computer shop on the corner there, just up from the Mayfair toward Percy Street.

Whe I did my other posting, I was thinking of the area around the end of Byker Bridge where the Blackfriars Hall is on the corner of Crawhall Rd.

Clarky

Your uncle must have been all but next door to the great man.

When I was there, he lived on the corner of St Gabriels Avenue and Beatrice Road. Now remembering I moved away 21 years ago so we are talking 25+ years ago.

Sting/Grant also apparently lived in the same area/street and his parents had a paper shop on the corner of Benton Road/Cornel Road....but it blew away (boom boom)

ITK,
I just don't believe it - I must call my Aunt tomorrow and find out if they knew. JET was absolutely a super-hero to my Dad and Uncle - he MUST have known he lived just around the corner.
MyUncle was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour - I'll bet him, Jackie and my old man are sitting right now, sharing drinking Broon and playing doms in the Angel Arms, laughing their bloody socks off at me.
Thanks for the info Ken.

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Hey Clarky....if instead of the Angel Arms, they are playing doms in the Celestial Meadowfield Social Club then chances are my old man will be with them.....with my old mum waiting on her cloud, having just one more fag, before getting the dinner on!

-- Anonymous, May 29, 2000

Fawdon -

my aunt lives there. You want to watch out for her, she's a nutter.

Otherwise It's fine. I believe they call it the Hampstead of the North.

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

And yet you never hear Hampstead as the Fawdon of the South ....

Had had on a second .. stop it man , bliddy tears welling up in me eyes as i speak .. stop talking about St Gabriels , Beatrice , Holderness , Ivymount .. i came off me bike in aal them streets . Now ive only just skim read all this cos i was desperate to get an entry in . That house on the corner of holderness next to the vicarage .. put many a 'tenniser' in the back of there and a couple of 'casers' too if i remebre rightly . The lawn at the back of ST . Gabs made a great pitch for all sports : - ) Now then Dougal what number Ivymount is it ? Ill have a story for every bliddy number i think .. some really nice houses down there and big gardens .. pretty private treet as its away from the main roads and onnly leads onto one more road . dead close for walks in the dene .. Sundays at the flea marketa at Armstrongs bridge and like ITK says buses into Haymarket via Sandyford take 15 mins tops and theres plenty after the match that avoid the traffic and so youllbe home in no time . Peoples theatre for a bit of 'cultcha ' and the corner house for errrr .. aye a bit more 'cultchaaa'. In short id move there tomorrow . I used to live at 1 ST Gabriels avenue .. house opposite the church , and we are in fact currently talking about buying it back ( me and me brother ) from the current owners , for me Mam and Dad to retire to . As rightly pointed out the student areas are the other side of Heaton Road and nearer Chilly Road up towards Heaton Park . If you want a canny neighbourly , quiet street , id say Ivymount is perfect . Dougs send us an e mail with the dets , im dead interested to see which one it is to see if meself or the family knows the history ( bad karma etcc... ) , and to see the price change in the area recently .. Grant.Murray@uk.abnamro.com Nae offence to whoever comes from Waalker .. but Clarky , howay man what gave you that impression ? ; - ))

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Apparently Hampstead is not posh enough to stake a claim to be the Fawdon of the south. It can get away with claiming to be the Coxlodge of the south, although there are no pubs that quite match the Trap and you have to walk further to your allotment.

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Sting,

Humble apologies marra! I momentarily thought ITK was talking about Gordon Summers and not the real Sting.
I'm sure Mr. Summers hails from Walker or Wallsend - at least he was waxing lyrical on the Parky Show about the beautiful River vistas of cranes and ships in his acquired semi-posh accent. Writes canny songs mind.

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

didn't Mr Summer's teach in Ashington?

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

I don't know about Mr Summers or where he taught, but there was a Gordon Sumner who used to teach in Cramlington.....allegedly gazing out of the window one day gave him the inspiration for 'Walking on the Moon' - not hard to see how is it?

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

I hord I was a French techer , and thats how I like came up with the idea for Regatta de blanc , alors ca c'est vrai que j'etait un profeseur de francais . A bientot .

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Grant, Pattinson's don't give road number but it looks like a corner house with a nice bit of cornicing and a willow....

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Sounds like the house where Barry who did the announcing at Brough Park speedway used to live , with his mother .. check the decorating .. if its owt like his dress sense you could be in bother !

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Not again. ITK I am standing up in a wedding with Tony Lowry in July along with Dave lant. Dougal High Heaton is brill, nuff said. You've got the dean, hospital, St mary's, the corner Hoooooooouse. And when you've spent all your money in the toon on the piss you can walk home

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Blackfriars

Nice area, very central but also v.noisy - you get problems of parking your car safely, and ejected cutomers from Planet Earth and The Stage Door (ahh - memories of nurses (or nurses mammaries :-))) puking outside your bedroom window/singing/pi**ing through your letter box (not me - although some nights are a bit hasty).

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

HAZY not hasty - doh!

-- Anonymous, May 30, 2000

Me dad taught Sting when he was training to be a teacher at |Northern Counties College. He still has his marks from the time he was there. Might be of use to the NOTW (ptuh) some day

-- Anonymous, June 01, 2000

Stop rioting man , or we'll have the Police over : -)

-- Anonymous, June 01, 2000

Grrroooooaaaaaannnnnnnn......

Resurrected in memory of ITK.

-- Anonymous, May 17, 2002

what a lovely place, trees, birds and the corner hoose only a minutes stumble away. Anyone up fer a heaton lads thread??

-- Anonymous, May 17, 2002

Thanks for that Pete. Lovely thread, with some celestial references that with hindsight were a little too close for comfort.

Reading all those posts by Ken again almost brings him back to life. So evocative: so sad.

-- Anonymous, May 17, 2002

Thanks Pete. Let's all raise a glass this weekend in his memory.

-- Anonymous, May 17, 2002

'High' Heaton? And I thought Blyth was the drugs capital of the NE. Nice way to remember ITK, Pete.

-- Anonymous, May 17, 2002

You need to be careful when you go to get your fish supper on the Chilly road these days.

-- Anonymous, May 19, 2002

Dougal (welcome back BTW!), Swift has a very nice flat for rent in Leazes Terrace! I'm completely serious here. Email him at oliverfowler@excite.com or via my email if his isn't working.

Perfect for stumbling home from the Strawberry...

-- Anonymous, May 19, 2002

Errr... just saw the dates on this thread and the reason why.

Hangover is my only excuse.

Swift DOES have a flat for rent though, if anyone's interested...
