manipulative?

Liz, One wonderful thing about NLP techniques---and any change technology for that matter, is the existance of ECOLOGY. We pay a lot of attention to ecology when we work with someone on a process so that we can create real and lasting change. Without attention to ecology, THE CHANGE WE ARE WORKING TOWARD JUST WON'T STICK. So, if you do the zzzzt, and it sticks, then all is well. If it doesn't, then you missed something and they weren't able to fill it in.

Now, the REAL question is "Is it appropriate for YOU and your outcomes with your friend to unleash the power of NLP?" Clearly, if you care about the other person, and conceive of a positive, mutually beneficial relationship, wouldn't you want to bring all the best opportunities to bear on moving toward your outcome?

Just my thoughts. That M word carries a lot of weight....

Ken

Dim but going on indeed!

Hey Teri and all..

I'm getting together with a friend of mine on Sunday -- one that I haven't seen in a while because of a misunderstanding. So I'm thinking about talking about it and doing that zzzt! technique. My question is, is that being manipulative?

zzzttt!

Hi Liz, mind if I put in my two cents worth - wait a sec - let me up that to 3 or 4 cents, and maybe another metaphor would work like a wooden nickle or cyber nickle in this case. I'm wondering if the zzzttt you're referring to is the one associated with the reverse playback technique in the Phobia/Trauma relief? For some reason that sound also makes me think of the finger snap anchor applied in Tom Best's demo for setting and collapsing anchors. This makes me wonder a couple of things - could the zzzttt reverse memory technique be an anchor as well? And, are you wanting to neurologically eliminate a tape of one of your life's expereinces, set, or collapse an anchor? You certainly have the beliefs, skills, and resources to do any of those given you have permission from your 'parts'. Likewise, even conversationally now you have the capabilities to establish rapport and permission with your friend to understand thier outcome, dovetail your outcome, and reestablish positive states regarding your relationship or what ever chunk of change is manageable to you in the situation - if that's what you both want. That, I would 'call' negotiating with someone in order to connect and relate in a more positive way. Hey - have a great weekend and exceptional Sunday! Debbie

ZZZtt!!

Ken and Debbie-

Thank you for the very helpful feedback! Thank you Debbie, for reminding me of how many options there are, and I'm now looking at what technique is really the most appropriate for the situation. This friend and I decided we are doing a "start over" and interestingly enough, he suggested that we meet at the same place we met the first time for what he called a "psychological reset." That seems interesting.

Anyway, I have a strong concern that as I practice these new techniques, I want to be coming from a place of integrity. The notion of dovetailing outcomes is very, very important. I just really am humbled by the raw power of some of these techniques. I think Tom Best's discussion of working to make the world a better place is important.

There's that vs. the guy who has harnessed NLP techniques to create his "speed seduction" seminar. Now THAT is manipulation, and not dovetailing outcomes. Hmm...

Any thoughts? Have a fabulous weekend, all!

zzzt! process

Hi Liz: In my opinion it is all a matter of intent. If the intent is a genuine interest in healing relationship, valuing differences and similarities and nurturing friendship, I think the application of the technique (or any other) is justified. Have you thought about the Negotiation Process? Hope this adds some value. Joe R.

NLP at work?

Here I am with the day off and searching for sun in cyber space. I've been looking forward to using this new message board. I like your idea of reframing - not sure if you've reframed to 'NLP at work' or brainstorming for other descriptions, meanings of this phrase? What else have you created so far? Are you 'at work' today? Debbie
