Let's see some portraits

greenspun.com : LUSENET : People Photography : One Thread

Anyone care to share some of their portraits, I will upload some when I get home, but i really would like to see some of the work others have done.

Don't upload glamour, fashion, figure, random street stuff etc. I'd like to see some portraits that show me something about the person. I want to see a connection between the person and the portratist.

Anyone want to play?

Here is a picture of my daughter doing her homework. I used a 20- 35/2.8L Canon lens on my EOS-5 body. I used the lens at 20mm and moved in close to accentuate the homework page and the pencil in order to give it primary importance. The light was natural sunlight coming in from her left through a picture window. I also took another exposure with fill-flash at -1 stop, but it looked too artificial.

As long as I'm getting the html going better now, I'll have fun and post a couple more....

This was a human interest shot I took of a local woman recovering from cancer. There was a benefit bicycle ride held to raise money for her. I've posted a story about her . As far as a "connection" between her and me; I think it tells the story with the hat covering the hairless head, warm jacket, and candid smile on her face.

The shot was taken with a 80-200/2.8L Canon zoom at the long end with a big aperture.

Okay, here's my last one. This one is of my two daughters enjoying a rare trip to the local bowling alley. The light is pretty harsh, but perhaps this tell the "bowling alley" story better than soft light.

I used the wide end of the wide-angle zoom again, this time placing the bowling balls in the forground for prominance. Light was from the dreaded on-camera flash.

This is a friend of mine who was kind enough to sit for me while I experimented with lights.

OK, this is Iggy Pop.

Just kidding. This is someone known in San Francisco as Dan the Snake Man. He started the stage show at a once-a-week club called Bondage A-Go-Go. I was trying to do a series of portraits of people from San Francisco's "sex underground" (as if anyone having to do with sex in San Francisco can be underground) when they were at home, but since most of them didn't want anyone to know who they were outside of fetish getup, the project didn't get very far.

Anyway, Dan spends most of his free (non-Snake Man) time gardening, so that is how I photographed him.

Though this may look rather glamorous, it wasn't intended that way. My friend Diz was in from London, and she wanted to go to the beach. We drove out to Venice with a camera-shy friend of ours, and while he went off to collect us hamburgers and onion rings, I broke out the Polaroid Land camera -- yes, that's right, a Land camera -- and took this snapshot of her (the camera is equipped with a Portrait Kit).

We both liked the result very much and had a laugh about how seductive she looked. She's the perfect model, because she really adores having her picture taken. One can see why.

So does this count as a portrait? This is a test bridal portrait for advertising my wedding photography. The model is the daughter of a coworker of mine. This was her first time modeling, but her presence and personality in front of the lens was amazing.

Actually the watch is there by design - do grooms remove theirs? Anyway, this is a rather nontraditional bride. She's wearing a white peasant dress, tennis shoes, and brown socks!
