[B] Soccer: Joe Kinnear on verge of becoming Wednesday boss By Agence France-Presse Sheffield, England--May 24--Joe Kinnear has revealed he is on the brink of agreeing to take over as Sheffield Wednesday's new manager. * * * The 53-year-old former Wimbledon boss, who will give Wednesday an answer appropriately enough on Wednesday, told the club's official web-site: "I am delighted and excited to be so close to returning to football at such a big club with what I see as enormous potential. "There are still things to discuss with Wednesday in terms of the club's future and I have to consider the implications for my family too. "There have been some tempting approaches since I left Wimbledon, but Wednesday represents a special challenge." Owls chairman Howard Culley admitted the club were targeting "one individual" to replace acting caretaker-boss Peter Shreeves. And Kinnear, who also had a spell in charge at Doncaster, has the right credentials to set about the task of taking Wednesday straight back to the Premiership after their recent relegation. The Irishman was the man who managed to keep Wimbledon out of relegation trouble during his tenure with the London club. Culley was not prepared to reveal if Kinnear was the favorite, but did say: "We still have a number of candidates to consider, but we are now focusing on one individual." "We are not there. Until a deal is done we are not going to make any announcement," Culley told the Sheffield Star. Kinnear had to stand down in June last year after suffering a mild heart attack before the Dons' match against Wednesday at Hillsborough in March 1999 but has made a full recovery and is now eager for a return to management. And his arrival at Wednesday would be welcomed by MP and former board member Joe Ashton, one of the so-called 'Gang of Four' MPs who called for the sacking of ex-boss Danny Wilson late last year. "If it is true, it is very, very good news," Ashton said. "I just wish (the board) had signed him on before Christmas when all four MPs suggested it. "I met Joe Kinnear at an England match, quite by chance, and talked to him then and he was very, very keen. I told all the board and the chairman and I phoned the directors, and I couldn't make any headway." End

He was probably after tickets for the FA Cup final.

So when is he possibly likely to have talked to us? He had his heart attack in March '99 and presumably was "on the mend" for at least 3 months after that taking us into the close-season last year. Now, not lng after the season started, TDO finally got hi come-uppance. I can't honestly believe the board would have considered him over YBR, who as you may recall was flying the "come and get me" flag as soon as TDO went.

Perhaps Joke was on the blower to us, but I doubt if we initiated any calls to him. Please.
