Does anyone have experience with the Epson 1600 scanner, particularly in scanning negs and trans? For example: Can you make Velvia look like Velvia? Can you take 35mm to 8x10 with reasonable result

I bought the Epson 1600 Pro about 2 months ago, it's amazing at medium format and prints but really, its not enough for 35mm 8x10's. Technically it has the resolution but you'll find that a Nikon LS-30 would do better. You have to interpolate to get over 1600dpi (not nearly enough for a 35mm frame) and it's not really up to snuff. I've found that even my humble HP Photosmart scanned better 35mm and the Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 blows it away. Medium format and 4x5 transparencies are absolutely stunning though, easily sharper and more accurate than a Powerlook III or Microtek. Awesome scanner, and the firewire connection is wicked fast, do yourself a favor and buy the Silverfast software as the Epson software is the weakest link in the product.
