Sports and Sony?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

I'm looking to buy a Digital camera to do some sports shots, including some snow work. The shots ideally need to look good when printed to 22x30cm (British A4).

I was thinking of picking up a Sony DSC-770 while they're going cheap. Can anybody comment on the suitablity, or maybe suggest a similar product? I'm an experienced SLR user and was initially attracted to the Sony for it's manual control.

Many thanks,

I use the Sony FD-91 to take photos of Ice Hockey and Dance. The 91 has lots of good user adjusted controls, and a fantastic 14x optical zoom with image stabilization. I can't praise the optics on this camera enough. The optics and image stabilization more than compensate for the lower resolution this camera provides.

You can check out my photos at Photopoint.com Go down to the "Visit Album" box and type in my e-mail address. That should allow you to take a look at the photos.

Alastair:
John is right - the 91 is a nice camera - the lens is suited well for sports. I own a 91 myself.
but
Printing full A4 will net you some pretty disapointing results. The 91 doesn't quite offer the resolution for the size prints you want.
Also - the 91 requires several seconds (~8 to 10)between shots (at the high resolution setting) to write the image to disk. This wait is quite frustrating to sports photographers. I don't know what the time between shots on the higher resolution 770 is - but it's likely much faster since it doesn't use a floppy.
