Scanner problems

Can someone tell me where I am going wrong with my scanner. I`ve been scanning some photographs, but when I send them via e mail they are coming out poster size! I didn`t think I was doing anything to change the size, so obviously there is an important step somewhere along the way that I am messing up. I save them as those funny j peggy things! (:o) Help!

Hiya honey,

Not very helpful I know but there's got to be some settings that you can alter which will allow you to change the resolution (quality) and size of the image that you scan in...or alternatively there could also be some settings when you are saving (when you select .jpg) that allow you again to set the quality etc of the saved file...

Not much help but I can't see your software or computer so it ain't easy to give advice...

Gal,

I usually use a photo package, Photoshop of Image Pals Image Editor (comes with Scantastic) to re-size the image before sending it. You'll see the command in the menu.

Hope this helps!

Its probably your resolution , scan in at 72dpi and you should be ok.

If you scan at higher then the image will enlarge to display on a 72dpi monitor.

Galaxy
I think at 72 DPI, the image would be crap. Could be that the recipient has a lower resolution monitor than you have, so when its displayed the image will look correspondingly larger.

It could be nowt to do with the scanner. I would still scan in at the highest possible resolution to keep the photo looking 'photographic' - the lower the resolution you scan at, the more grainy the pic will look.

Really need to know the image editor you're using to drive the scanner. Could also have nowt to do with your settings, but be due to settings at the receiving end.

Thank you Kenny, Pit Bill - I shall have to do a bit of experimenting! (:o)

Titter ye not Gav! This damn scanner is sending my bloodpressure off the scale. Either it goes through the window and into the garden, or I will (I`ll probably use the door though!) I know that the average five year old could master this, probably so simple that my dogs could do it! But I cannot find out how to send these stupid fluppin` photos at an acceptable size. Right, I`m going to have to stop trying for a bit now, before I do something I will regret! I shall work on the principle that when I try again later, all calm and collected, my mistakes will be blindingly obvious. That`s the theory! (:o)

Gal,

I was tittering that you were telling everyone that you were at home "experimenting"....hehe it still tickles me today :)) I'm very easily amused you know :)))

Why is there a problem if they're coming out poster sized at the other end? the other person can just reduce them surely? all you should really be after is keeping the file size down so that it doesn't take too long to send/receive them....do that by reducing the resolution when saving....

Gav, just as soon as I have finished weeding, I will try again. Unsually, my patience has run out this morning - not point in looking at it yet. (:o) Oh, but thank you for the advice - much appreciated. (:o)

File size is dependent on the resolution AND physical dimensions of the scan. As in, if a photo at full size takes up the entire screen or more AND it's scanned at photographic quality it's gonna be a huge mofo. It's a mystery to me as to why the scanner manufacturer's can't make a "beginners" setting which would automatically keep the scan down to reasonable dimensions at least(maybe 200 x 400 pixels?). Or even a series of automatic settings, like 'web display' that would scan at 75dpi with a 200x400 image size. Or a 'printable' that would scan at 300dpi with a printable size of 4x6 inches. Just one click of the button and it's all done for you. Now I'm rambling, sowwy. :-)

Hang in there Galaxy, I've no doubt you'll figure the thing out. Scanners and their accompanying software are are very confusing.

Ain`t that the truth Ciara! And I guess I just wasn`t in the mood today. Nice to know that it`s not just me being a total twonk though! I shall overcome! (:o)
