Centre Back Pairing

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

The team needs a solid centre back pairing for next year, something we haven't had consistently since Howey-Peacock i would suggest.

So who's it going to be?

I would like to see Howey and Goma.

Don't want to jump in with a rash judgement but I don't think Howey has done anything since he came back from injury this season other than look bad....

If he regains he pre-injury form then I'd include him but up until then I'd live with Dabs-Goma (assuming no Helder)...

I think the starting [point for any pairing has to be Hughes.

He's young - but then our future will be built on young players.

He's inexeprienced - but is he? How much more experience canm he be given (on the pitch at least) before he deserves to be a main CB?

My preferred option is Hughes and Dabizas - with moves towards replacing Dabizas season after next.

As much as I like Howey, he is not what he was or should be considering how crap we are at the back. Helder and dabs, griffin is going to be fab next season so is hughes.

I'd like to postpone 'judgment' on Howey until he's had at least half a season playing. I would admit that he didn't display anything like his previous form in the games he played towards the end of the season. However, we have to remember that he's been out for a hell of a long time, and in those circumstances it must take a fair amount of playing time to approach your best form.
The key really is his fitness - if he can avoid injury I'd be disappointed if he didn't eventually regain something his prior form. However, if he keeps getting injured he may sadly become a lost cause.

I agree Clarky. I worry that he has permanently lost pace and presence, but there were the odd glimpses of the old football brain working and the ability to read the game. Hopefully with proper fitness, he will be faster and sharper.
