18/05/2000 UK: BUST-UP STARS SHRUG OFF ROW TO PLAY A ROUND.

ENGLISH soccer star Neil Ruddock yesterday shrugged off an alleged bust-up at a top Scots hotel to play in a showbiz golf tournament. West Ham player Ruddock linked up with England captain Alan Shearer for his round - and was joined at the last minute by Scots snooker star Stephen Hendry. Hendry was drafted in after ex-Aberdeen player Mike Newell walked out following the alleged brawl at the exclusive Gleneagles Hotel. Newell and Ruddock - who is nicknamed Razor because of his hardman image - are said to have come to blows in the hotel bar. A spokesman for Tayside Police yesterday confirmed they had been called to the top hotel - but had not taken action because no one had made an official complaint. Ex-Aberdeen player Newell and his wife Catherine quit their #395-a-night room at the plush hotel on Tuesday following the alleged late-night fight with the West Ham favourite. They are now back at their plush #500,000 home in Formby, Merseyside. Seven times snooker world champ and keen golfer Hendry, 31, refused to discuss his last-minute call-up yesterday. He ignored questions from reporters and instead laughed as the trio made their way round the Queen's Course. Newcastle striker Shearer, 29, and Ruddock, 32, also refused to comment when asked about Newell's sudden departure. One member of the Gleneagles staff said Shearer and Ruddock both looked a bit "worse for wear" as they left for their game yesterday. The worker added: "Ruddock said he had a sore head and he looked quite haggard." The players and their wives had enjoyed red wine with their meals at the five-star hotel on Tuesday and ordered bottles of champagne from the bar. But hotel staff were forced to call in the police in the early hours as trouble flared. Staff said potato wedges and savoury dips were thrown in the bar and some food was smeared across windows. Eyewitnesses claimed that hotel staff cleaned up the mess before police officers arrived. Newell and wife Catherine went to their room after the row while Shearer, Ruddock and their wives continued chatting until around 3am. Yesterday a Gleneagles spokeswoman said: "We respect the privacy of all our guests and would never comment on matters surrounding their stay." (c) Scottish Daily Record & Sunday Mail Ltd, 2000.
