Best choice of film type for scanning ?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Just started using a Nikon LS2000 film scanner and i've noticed a huge difference in the quality of scans from different film types and speeds (both slides and negatives).

Does anyone know of a site which has reviewed a variety of films and their suitability for scanning or can anyone recommend a particular films type ? My best results so far have been achieved with Fuji Velvia, but the rest - particularly Kodak Gold Negatives have been poor especially in shadow details.

Many thanks

Martin

I don't have an LS2000, but I've noticed the same sort of differences that you mention with my scanner. I have to agree that Velvia scans well, even though the contrast's a bit too high for my liking. The negative film that's given me the most realistic results so far has been the Kodak Ektar professional range, 100, 125 or whatever flavour-of-the-month ISO rating Kodak decides. (I wish they'd leave these films alone, you just get used to one emulsion, and they go and change it slightly)
