Did United's absence devalue this year's FA Cup Final?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

After all we have been in the last 2 finals and I think we and our incredible fans were sorely missed.

I didn't miss ManUre at all.

All I heard during the second half, was the odd chours of Villa Villa, were there any Chelsea fans there? Apart from Blur and Timmy (ahhhhhh) Lovejoy??

Amen, Jonno! There was just something odd about not seeing half the stadium in black and white.

Of course it did Jonno.....as long as the United you refere to in the heading is our beloved Newcastle UNITED and not Newton Heath.

If it were the latter you were refering to, we'll have to send Softie and his Boys round to sort you out.

In reality, no their absence did not mean that the competition was devalued, that would be to suggest that any competition they get knock out of is devalued because they are no longer in it.

If any competition is devalued it's the Worthington cup, because of the way teams like Newton Heath and the Arse have fielded well under strength teams.

I'd love to answer but you didn't specify which United. I have an uneasy feeling that I know which United you meant. Don't we get enough of arrogant sods like LR and fawning media types calling them "United" without Geordies doing so?

On second reading of the "original question" it appears I may have been a little ahem.....hasty. There again it depends how you read it. Oh B****X! I don't know.

I'm just SOOOOO touchy about the "United" thing. I do wish all of you out there would refuse to "talk" to LR unless he specifies which United. He's just like the rest of them - too arrogant for words.

It's quite obvious (to me) that Jonno's talking about NEWCASTLE United!!! Maybe you (the others) didn't read his posting properly?

-- Anonymous, May 20, 2000

the answer is yes--especially on the fans side.Villa fans didn't seem to be shouting much at all-mind you they didn't have much to shout about, while Chelsea fans didn't really get going until they took the lead!! On the day the real United-NUFC-would have taken either of them, and as far as the Fans were concerned there isn't a need to even ask the question! Howay the lads!!!! alan

Jonno only ever refers to one team as United! And yes, we were missed. Boring game and bliddy quiet.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2000

There was no buzz about the Cup after we went out. No tales of people spending their life savings on a ticket. No giddy lovely people in the fountains. Nowt. That was cos we weren't in it. Sadly, Newton Heath Celtic will be back next year.

As I was going home from work last night, there was a bunch of Chewsee supporters chanting along the road, and unlike the last two years when we have been at Wembley and have sung our way round the streets of London sounding like football supporters who had had a great day, this bunch sounded like a bunch of old bliddy drunks who had just been chiucked out of the boozer cos they werre too loud and who clearly couldn't hold a tune if it had handles on it.

Did you notice that not a single Villa fan stayed to clap Chelsea through the tunnel? Do you remember the Arse game two years ago when the entire Toon end stayed and clapped them off? No bliddy class these Brummies.

No Jaccoi....they were still there, they had just been bored to sleep!

Newton Heath Celtic? What's that about Dougal?

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2000

SMB, when Newton Heath took a vote on what to call themselves and opted for Manchester United, one of the choices was Manchester Celtic. If only.

The ability to be magmanimous, even in defeat, is what separates the Toon Army from the herd. Yes, the cynics will say we've had more practice than most, but screw 'em, there's more to it than that.
Which other fans have more justification for being knarled and bitter, mean, jealous and disrespectful, than the Toon Army? But to our eternal credit we're not. We welcome back the 'good guys' - largely players who have served us with skill and dignity - and refrained from subsequently slagging off the Club/City/Region. We're not afraid to openly recognise extreme talent, and swallow pride and sorrow by giving due recognition to our victors, even on the biggest stage.
The demonstration of such dignity and good humour in defeat and adversity, as well as magnificent, hugely vociferous, unending support for OUR team is what makes the Toon Army so unique, so truly magnificent, and why I am so utterly proud to be a footsoldier.
I couldn't be arrogant enough to suggest our absence devalued the FA Cup Final at Wembley yesterday, but it was certainly the poorer for our absence. Clearly, I'm biased, but outside the fans of the two participating clubs, it has all been so low key, with no real buzz of anticipation - it even seemed as though the media just couldn't be @rsed.
This time around the Wembley terraces were peurile, lacking in humour, passion or volume. The occasion, like the sky, was grey and pallid.

The first half was grim, sterile; the teams utterly unadventurous, lacking flair or invention, but primarily lacking the testicles and fortitude to go out and win the bloody thing.
Frankly, the second half was only marginally better. Yes, I suppose the better team won, and the only semi-appealing, adventurous event on the day was the midget and his midget going up to collect the Cup. However, the ghost of the Toon hung over the entire event like a damp blanket - the team who should have collected the trophy weren't there, and the two who ultimately showed up put on show that entirely befitted their roles of pretenders.

I'm amazed at 2 or 3 responses here - no names no pack drill. Read Steph's contribution (coz you evidently didn't read mine!) which hits the nail on the head:-

>>>>>Jonno only ever refers to one team as United! And yes, we were missed. Boring game and bliddy quiet.

For those who didn't pause long enough to read what I wrote :-

SPELLING IT OUT

T-H-E-R-E I-S O-N-L-Y O-N-E U-N-I-T-E-D

It was blindingly bliddy obvious who I was talking about.

>>>Did United's absence devalue this year's FA Cup Final? >>>After all we have been in the last 2 finals and I think we and our incredible fans were sorely missed.

The words "WE" and "last 2 finals" were a dead giveaway I thought, but the clincher is the use of the word United.

T-H-E-R-E I-S O-N-L-Y O-N-E U-N-I-T-E-D

and one or two of you seem unsure who it is... (-;

I think it's time for another crackdown by the BBS Thought Police.

Clarky

I gather you didn't enjoy the Final then? It was rank. I had the volume down in the second half 'cos I was on a conference call to work and I have to say, even that was more interesting than the match. Contrast it with the last FAC game played at Wembley. We might have lost but we did ourselves proud. Shame about the previous two years mind.

Ah well - there's always next year - wherever they deicde to play it.

Dougal (it is you isn't it? It's not Rik in disguise, eh?). How many have you had to drink tonight pet? Can't be doing the diet much good. And you said you'd come oot fer a drink with me the morra neet as well. Ooh - just think of aal them calories.

-- Anonymous, May 21, 2000

A resounding 'Yes'. The final's supposed to be a showpiece for English football. If I'd been a complete neutral I'd have turned it off half way through. Dire, and I'm still not sure that I care who won - think I snored marginally for Villa cos they were the non- london club.

Vialli is already whingeing that to try to get into Europe via the Inter Dodo, if they'd lost, would have seriously affected their chances in the league next season.
