There's a plague sweeping the country, killing loads of people, so the prince (Prince Prospero) decides to segregate himself and a number of his subjects from the plague by locking them up in a big abbey. Inside the abbey there's music and dancers and loads of other cool stuff. It's divided into seven rooms, and everything in each room is of one colour, i.e. one's just in yellow, one's just in white, etc. There's also a big clock. One day he decides to have a big fancy-dress party, which in those days was called a "masquerade". In the party a strange and unrecognised man turns up dressed in red. He represents the red death. Now that he's inside the abbey they're not safe any more. They all get the plague and die. The end. If you can't be bothered to read the story there's a film starring that charming Vincent Price, a.k.a. Grand Moff Tarkin from the original Star Wars. Hope that helps.
