Fringe Fashion

here's a fashion photograph of mine I would like to share with you guys. it's a tearsheet from Meg magazine (in the Philippines) April 2000 issue. I am quite happy with it, and it is really the result of Tanya (the model) and Pierra (the stylist) doing a great job.

Very nice. If you don't mind my asking, what did the rest of the assignment consist of? And what did they pay?

Thanks for the comment John. There are 4 other shots in that same spread. I'm trying to get around to uploading the rest and redesign my web site.

As far as pay is concerned, it's really quite low compared to US standards. At best, it's about one-third, roughly, compared to the rates I've seen in the EPP (the lower ones). We are really far behind, as far as the issue of space rates ad usage rights are concerned, to the advantage of the magazines of course. We over here view editorial work more as advertising rather than...well...an income-generating activity, which in turn allows us to go after more lucrative advertising accounts.

Hi tommy,

a friend of mine and myself were discussing your image and we both agree that it is quite successful. I particularly like your stylists choice of clothing and accessories. Shooting with interference in the foreground is really difficult and I think you pulled it off quite nicely. Any chance of seeing some of the outtakes that led to this shot, its always interesting to see them.

Thanks for sharing.

Altaf, thanks for the comments, and you're welcome. I'll pass on your compliments to the stylist, I'm sure that would make her smile.

I regret I can't show the out takes though, since the slides are with the publication. Most of the shots for that lay-out look similar, on first glance, with tiny adjustments done with the position of the branches/leaves and the model's expression and eye direction (though a gust blew a foreground branch at the moment of one exposure and completely obscured the model's face with leaves).

If I recall correctly from other threads, we use the same system. FWIW, I used a Mamiya 645 with the 150 f/3.5 for that shot.
