Nikos Dabizas has ended speculation about his future with Newcastle United by signing a new four year contract.

The Greek international was considering his position with the club at the start of the season which has just concluded, but he was not alone in that line of thinking. However negotiations, which have been going on for some time, have concluded with Dabizas agreeing to stay on.

Kenny Dalglish snapped up the 26 year old for what has turned out to be a bargain #1m when signing him from then Greek Champions Olympiakos in 1998.

Nikos became the first Greek to play in the English FA Cup final, hitting the bar with a header in the second half with Newcastle trailing 1 - 0, eventually going on to lose 2 - 0 to Arsenal.

He equalled a record which had stood for over 100 years when scoring in three successive matches in January 2000, the first time a defender had scored three times in succession since 1897. Would have set a new record had he scored against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park, but the team were beaten 2 - 0.

Speaking just before the team moved from Port Of Spain Trinidad to the island of Tobago, Chairman Freddy Shepherd confirmed the news, saying: " Nikos deserves his new deal, he has had a fine season.

" He is a strong defender who gives everything to the club. "

Bobby Robson is a known admirer of the player and news of the deal comes as no real surprise.

More evidence that one of the other Johnies will be off this summer.
