SQL not running

greenspun.com : LUSENET : SQL Server Database Administration : One Thread

Dear Eric, I have recently installed SQL7 on a new server. I log on to the new server and then Enterprise Manager. I click on my SQL7 server and I see the following message: "The SQL Server is not known to be running. Are you sure you wish to connect?". I have registered my server and I have it starting automatically at OS startup. Could you please explain why I am seeing this message? Thanks for you help!

Nathan,

The message in most instances means you don't have the right to poll the service states with the userid you're logged in with. So, as long as you log in as an administrator of the machine running SQL Server you shouldn't see this message.

I see this message all the time with no ill effect. (Because I do not log into the server as an administrator.) I just click OK (or whatever button tells it to go ahead and connect) and it goes ahead and connects.

Hope this helps,

Eric
