Leitz Canada 1.4/35 Summilux M lens

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Leica Photography : One Thread

I just bought a used Leitz Canada 1:1.4/35 Summilux lens for Leica M. I wonder if it is the 11870 model, as listed in the leica papers M lens spec. (www.imx.nl/photosite/leica/m/lenses/listm.html). The serial# is greater than 2166700, the last for the 11869 model. The lens came without caps or hood, so I need to get them. What puzzles me is that although the dealer stated its filter size is 41, the metal ring in front of it, which is about 41mm in diameter, doesn't have a thread. There is a thread inside, closer to the glass, but that measures only about 36mm. -- Y. He

You have the later lens. The first lenses had an E41 threaded filter ring. The later lenses have no filter thread but the shade also functions as a holder for series 7 filters. The front cap is 14268, the rear cap is 14269 and the hood is 12504. These are still available new and, of course, used. Cheers!

Find out something new everyday. I bought a brand new Summilux 35/1.4 (353 xxxx) last December from a Leica dealer/with 3 yr. warranty. Come to find out the lens was made in 1990. Apparently sat on dealers shelf for 10 years. But this is a great lens.

You´re rigth, no thread, the inner one is from where the lens dismounts, I was sure it had a 41mm, any way is a great lens, so compact for a 1.4, just be careful when wide open with ligth sources just out side the frame, I just got great halos, like rings of ligth 15 to 20mm round, actualy prety interesting, I don´t know if Steve LeHuray got them in his 353xxx lens, mine is 2626xxx, otherwise a great 35.And I think you can use earlier 35mm shades.Roberto Watson

There is a special shade just for the lens under discussion. It is marked for 35mm. 1: 1.4. It differs from my other shade, marked for the 50mm 1:2.0 and 35mm. 1:2.0 lenses, in that it is just a bit shorter and has a slightly larger open area for the lens to "see through." Mechanically, either shade will fit the 35 Lux, but I would be concerned about vignetting at full aperture if the wrong shade is used.
