NIKON COOLPIX 990 VS. OLYMPUS (2500 & 3030 ZOOM)

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

AS A NOVICE, I NEED TO TAKE DIGITAL PHOTOS FOR BOTH A WEBSITE & A PRINTED CATALOG (GLOSSY, HIGH RESOLUTION). ALTHOUGH MOST OF THE PHOTOS WILL BE OF JEWELRY, SOME WILL BE OF HANDBAGS & LADIES ACCESSORIES. FOR THIS USE, WHICH DIGITAL CAMERA BEST SUITS MY NEEDS: 1) THE NIKON COOLPIX 990 (GOOD CLOSE-UP REVIEWS), 2) THE OLYMPUS 2500 (GREAT OVERALL REVIEWS; BUT LOWER RESOLUTION [EVIDENTLY AN IMPORTANT FACTOR WHEN CONSIDERING THE PRINTED CATOLOG]) OR 3) THE OLYMPUS 3030 ZOOM (WITH IDENTICAL RESOLUTION TO THE NIKON 990; BUT, EVIDENTLY, AN 8 INCH MINIMUM SHOOTING DISTANCE [RANGE], COMPARED TO THE NIKON 990'S 0.8 INCH MINIMUM RANGE)? THANX

It seems to me that your question contains your answer. You need to shoot closeups of jewelry for a catalog and the reviews appear to favor the 990 in that respect so that would seem to be your best bet. (I must admit I am biased since I own one)

Also I would like to respectfully suggest that you stop using all caps in your messages. It is considered to be shouting on the internet.

Both cameras are reallt good at macro shots. I did this test at a local photo store: Photograph a quarter in macro mode with max zoom (no digital zoom) See how much of the frame the quarter fills and compare. I know there are extra macro kits for the oly (i just bought one) there must be similar ones for the nikon. I did fine a really good comparison at http://www.dcresource.com/specials/C3030Z_vs_CP990/index3.html Enjoy!
