CoolPix990 Image Sharpening/Contrast Vs software

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Hi There,

Does anyone know if it is important to use the CoolPix 990's Contrast/Brightness/Sharpening tools, or can I just use my photoshop do to the same. Is there a difference between using Photoshop (or other imaging software) compared to using the camera's internal tools?

Thanks, Haskell :^)

I just picked up a 990 as well, and have spent considerable time going over the docs and testing the images and shooting. I would think that you couldn't get around the fact that the software can't improve what's not there. Images can be enhanced, but colour and light may be missing to greater or lesser degrees. I suppose that's why the 'bracketing' option is available to extract the best shot for the least efform. My take is... Shoot first and make software excuses later. :-)

The only exception might be when the file format you are shooting in is JPEG. Depending on the compression (you always throw away some info), manipulation in the camera may be making changes to the raw image before compression and storage to the "digital film". In this case the in-camera image editing may be different from editing the jpeg image later in Photoshop.
