INDIAN GOVERNMENT: Rajya Sabha -- Better facilities to telephone subscribers

Story Filed: Tuesday, May 16, 2000 10:45 AM EST

MAY 16, 2000, M2 Communications - The Government has been continuously monitoring the problems faced by the telephone users through various Public Grievances Cells and Fault Reporting Systems. Attempts are made to repair most of the faulty telephones within norms.

However, sometimes delays take place due to cable faults, major break down of lines, prolonged power failure etc. especially in rural areas. Such faults, due to their nature, take longer time to rectify But in order to improve customer satisfaction a number of steps have been taken. These include training to Line Staff to deal with the customers, computerisation of fault repair service, directory enquiry and billing in all exchanges, installation of Remote Switching Units (RSUs) to reduce the underground cable length and thereby reducing fault liability, provision of pagers to Linemen to reduce fault clearance and bill payment through banks.

This information was given by the Minister of State for Communications, Shri Tapan Sikdar in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
