Help: season's retrospective

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

I'm doing a retrospective of the season. Please please please, can you let me have your big memory of the season. Can be good, bad or just typically Toon. You'll all be accredited (if you wish!). Thank you.

Bad
The two away games on Sky in a week in the dreaded time: Spurs and Southhamton. Two piss poor, I mean piss poor second half displays. I realised just how much trouble we were in after those two games.
Good
Having Sunday lunch with my pissed brother-in-law (a Gateshead Makem - the type you just hate believe me) on the day A1 scored 5. I had him close to tears and close to punching me.

almost willing the mackems to beat us to get rid of the nightmare that was Guillit

The ultimate low point must be losing to the mackems. I couldn't see a way that they could beat us but it was never to be. At this point all was not apprant regarding the Shearer-Gullit situation and I admit I was starting to wonder about Shearer.

The most excellent thing about being a Newcastle supporter this season was every time that Bobby was giving a post match interview. Many people have watched the games round at my flat and they support a variety of teams incl. Manure, Spurs, Liverpool and they all said at one point that the Toon were so lucky to have such a great manager at their club.

The best for me was that marvellous moment when we scored at Wembley. I cried. I noticed other "grown men" around me crying as well.... THIS WAS IT!!! It was like someone suddenly released a valve and a lifetime of bottled up pressure just came out.

Pity it only lasted 4 minutes :((

It's a bit difficult for me to contribute to this thread as I've not seen the toon in the flesh since Charlton at home (Aug 98). But the one moment I'll really remember this season was being in a football bar in Tokyo at about 7pm during the official Japan fan club meeting when tehre was a phone call from Newcastle for the Chairman of the group. We'd all reached the same conclusion by the end of the conversation.
Where were you when Kennedy was shot? Probably wouldn't remember.
Where were you when Reagan was shot? No idea.
Where were you when Gullit left?
Celebrating in a pub in Tokyo. Wahey!!!

Taking 9 year old Ben to games for the first full season has put a different perspective on things. Highlights

The split second silence when Shearer was sent off.

The rain against Sunderland.

Being 4-0 up at half tme against Sheff Wed and Ben saying "that mean's it'll be 8-0 at the end", and me explaining it didn't work like that. (Same last Sunday ?!)

Boro scoring in the last minute to make it 2-1 and Ben winning his first ever correct score bet.

Learning what awau supporters were for when we played Sheff Utd in the cup, and Ben gleefully singing (and understanding) "are you Wednesday in disguise ?"

Dunc's goal.

For me the Robert Lee goal also released a valve that had been blocked for 24 years, somehow it was very difficult to close the valve again but Gustav found a way. I hope the emotion of that moment has sucked Ben in forever.

Gavilan running twirling a finger in the air after scoring

Shearer's free kick on Sunday, such raw power, such delight from the crowd.

In no particular order :-

High Points ***********

Shearer v Leeds - awesome -

Villa away - a real team display - 1-0 and never in doubt

LKD v Everton

Sparrowhawk v Everton Reserves - 1st time I'd seen him and in the 1st half he was brilliant

Low points **********

Poyet

Didn't feel anything when we lost to the Mackems - I don't know why but I expected it and it shifted RG as forecast 10 days beforehand.
