JOHANNESBURG (May 15) XINHUA - Seven employees were killed in an explosion at a gold mine near Welkom Town in the Free State of South Africa on Monday morning, the South African Press Association reported.

Spokesman for Gold Fields Limited Francis Whitely said the explosion occurred 866 meters below the surface around 3:00 a.m. local time.

The names of the dead will be released as more information becomes available, he said.

The cause of the explosion was unknown at present.
