my gooses foot

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

this is so strange. my girl had a sore foot and we couldn't find any reason for it. she hobbled around with us feeling bad about her pain for about a week and then started getting better. finally it was healed and she seemed fine. now she is limping again, but this time it is the other foot that she's holding up and limping.can't figure this out, just started again with this foot two days ago. weird! laura

Does the foot look normal? No sores, swellings, signs of infection? If so, check out the entire leg and joints. Sometimes the cause of lameness is above the foot. Also check out the back and see if that is a problem. How is she acting otherwise? Eating OK, seems alert etc. "There are some bacterial septicemias that can affect multiple joints and produce shifting leg lameness. Just some ideas - geese aren't my area of expertise

Is this just a coincidence, and she has gotten injured twice? Maybe she chooses to lounge too near the goats' hooves? Does she sleep up on a board with nails sticking out? Is there anything like string getting wrapped around her toes?

no swelling, no signs of anything at all. leep checking her feet everyday to find some kind of answer for this, nothing. we are very careful about any nails or rope in any area with the critters, so that's not it. she is eating and drinking. does get around outside with every one. the other animals keep their distance from the geese or they wear them attached to their tail if they piss them off.she does tend to stay off by herself these days and just sit in the shade.will have the car back from my son on thursday and i think i will take her and see if the vet will take a look. she seems to be fine other wise, not acting like she's in pain, just limps when she walks and holds the foot out to the side when she stands and also when she's sitting.this has got me stumped. laura

I have a *duck* that is doing the same thing, so please let me know what you find out...maybe the problem is the same. I thought my duck was just dealing with a sprain. I have a few more drakes than hens (not for long) and they are mating this poor hen all the time, it seems. This is frequently happening out of water and she is supporting these guys on her back. Is your goose mating?

i have three geese. one gander and two ladies. the gander and the one having the problem are african. the other lady is chinese and she is the only one that the gander mates with and the only one that produces eggs.my goose with the foot problem is my favorite. she loves to be held, only be me and she wraps her neck around mine when i do and softly coos to me. laura

Maybe this foot is sore from doing the work of both when the other one was hurt? Or maybe she liked all the extra attention and is trying to get more, Is she off when she thinks your not around? Hope it works out ok,let us know what happens.
