Which strikers for 2000?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Unofficial Newcastle United Football Club BBS : One Thread

KK reckons on taking 5 strikers to Euro 2000; AS, Owen, Heskey, Fowler. Who else? Sheringham (for his understanding with AS). Philips for his proven season-on-season scoring record.....Cole for that trick with banjos and barn doors?

Personally out of the options, I think Cole is the best player, hampered only by his penchant for missing the occasional sitter...fine if you're playing in a team that makes shed loads of chances, but not doable in international footy.

I doubt if Fowler will be in the squad and certainly if he got picked before Cole or Phillips it would be ridiculous...cant see him possibly being near to his best after this seasons probs.

I think KK will start with Heskey+Shearer and bring on Phillps and/or Owen later on in matches to add some pace vs a tiring defence.

My big wish for Euro 2000 is that KK dosent continue his daft usage of Dyer as right back/wing back. Englands problem for years has been lack of pace+creativity- imagine throwing Owen on with Dyer( in a freerole) for the last 20 mins of each match......

Options options.

As leads line good in the air. Owen - pace good shooting Heskey - cover for leading and holding, would play well with shearer. Munchkin - through gritted teeth I'd have to say he'd be my bench man as he does ahve a knack of scoring from anywhere. F****r - don't think he'll be fit enough (but KK does this sort of thing) Sheringham - I would certainly consider him as he has been playing well but with Scoles in the side you don't need a withdrawn striker. Cole - Simular to Owen but doesn't score from range like the munchkin (does he have any parental element frin trinidad and tobago?)he may yet go though.

I would expect all the named players except Sheringham to figure in KK's initial squad, which could have as many as 28/29 players. Fowler will probably lose out when the squad is reduced as he's desperately short of match play.
I tend to agree with previous posts - AS & Heskey to start with Owen or Munchkin off the bench. However, I wouldn't to too surprised if AS & Owen were the preferred pairing.
With regard to Cole, I don't think he either can or will play alongside AS. He will be AS's stand-in, and God forbid he's needed!
After Euro 2000, when AS stands down, I believe Cole should be given his chance with an extended run of 5/6 games to get himself established. Much as it chokes me to say it, he's probably the only legitmate candidate for Big Al's shirt, and if he dosn't do the biz England could have serious problems in WC qualification.
