i and a few others have had this problem lately. ok first try this go to www.microsoft.com and dl the latest version of windows media player. Once done go to its options and make sure "all formats" is selected, now try it agin. If this still fails, go to www.downloads.com type in for 'jiao mpeg player" then have it search across the c-net network this will play it BUT be sure to Uncheck most of the video boxes in the windows media player as the two sometimes compete

Your are missing the scsc1hlp.vxd file in your windows\system\iosubsys subdirectory. Search the data base for a full answer I gave about 2 months ago. This file is required to make the IDE CDROM to act like a SCSI drive so that .DAT files can be read or copy to the HD. THe file is in one of the CAB files on the W98 or W95 disk. Copy this file to the above subdirectory and you will no longer get any errors. Good luck

klebsiella ,

hmm thats rather interesting and i am going to look into it, but i have reformatted quite a few times and my scuzzy burner has no problem, but the dvd rom that came with the system is another story. at anyrate from my reformats the dvd rom has never been able to play xvcds, so it might not be just that a file is missing. Up until recently i tried the jiao mpeg player and this (although not too well) has let my dvd rom play my xvcds.

You could also get vcdgear ( www.vcdgear.org ) and select dat -> mpg conversion. This will play in any media player, you jest need 700 MB of free space.

Really what you need is a good vcd player.

One thing very simple that I did... I downloaded WinDvd Platinum or whatever version of this software and after inserted my VCD disc which works perfectly. Also, you can save whatever file *.DAT and save in your Hard Disk and after rename the extension to *.MPG, and play it with another player, although it doesn't work always, often it gave me goods results (I think because some programs needs a specific extension and not like always happens: a specific format can open files)
