Bobby Robson

11th in table. Higher than either of the previous two managers despite horrendous start and no transfer budget. Positive goal difference. On points average since Bobby arrived, we'd be above Chelsea if he'd been manager since the start of the season. The real work starts next season but we have sooooo may reasons to be delighted. Well done to you lovely lads and lasses at the lap of honour. You had us in tears.

Just back in after a very pleasant afternoon at SJP, and evening in the Strawberry with some of our BBS luminaries - Jonno, Birthday Girl Jay, Steph, Dr. Bill, Softy (and ultimately even Mrs. Softie), Screacher, Gibbo, Dr. Bill and Pit Bill.
The match was very enjoyable, played in an excellent atmosphere throughout, with the new roof almost complete and seeming to hold in the noise - it should be utterly fantastic with 52,000 screaming Geordies in it.
In truth we were playing the Arse Reserves, but played pretty well, deserving to run out 4-2 winners after conceding two really soft goals to ensure we made a game of it - something BR really must sort out.
The return of 'Local Hero' to welcome the players out onto the field was richly welcome, and how fitting that our very own local hero blasted in his 300th league goal from ca.22 yds with a beautifully struck free-kick. The crowd were possibly as thrilled as the man himself.
Lee and Speed were outstanding yet again in midfield, and my only disappointment on the day was that the crowd didn't chant Speed's name after he scored his second goal -he's had an oustanding season, and richly deserved a small accolade from the crowd. Dyer and Solano were 'in & out' and the form of both is rather worrying. Dabs put in his usual 'heroic' performance which was commendable after what must have been such a distressing week for him - he's a good guy. Barton and Griffen made a few errors but generally did well, and Griffen's goal was superbly taken - a nice finish to a disappointing season for a very promising player.
Kets substitution provided a truly poigant moment, as the crowd responded warmly to what was probably Mad Dog's farewell. Kanu received a touching reception as he was substituted - he had simply oozed class, and looked the outstanding player on the field. It really is so positive and pleasant when the crowd react so positively to a fine performance by a player on either side.
A rousing and thoroughly deserved 'lap of honour' for the players who have responded so magnificantly after such a disastrous start to the season, and also for the the genius who orchestrated our salvation - Bobby Robson. He seemed to be enjoying it - so he should.
Well done Lads: very well done Bobby.

Yet another Robson-inspired event - the lap of honour. Nice to see the lads walked roond at snail's pace so YBR could keep up with them!

From the GUARDIAN'S REVIEW OF THE SEASON....

The Frank Sinatra comeback award Bobby Robson returned home to work his likeable magic on a Newcastle team demoralised by the egocentric Ruud Gullit.

Uneasy bedfellows John Gregory, clincial depression and Stan Collymore; George Graham and David Ginola; Ruud Gullit and humility; Sir Alex Ferguson and the media; Bobby Robson and the English language.

So true
