The attractive face of football

In a right mood owing to having to come to work ON THE LAST DAY OF THE SEASON (GRRRRRRRR!!!), I came through King's Cross earlier. As wel, as loads of Leeds fans shouting and swearing, there were Spurs fans, West Ham fans and, eeeeek, Sunderland fans. We are so much nicer en masse than these people. The Makems were singing the old "he's got crabs and can't get rid of it" about Shearer (I think they really think they made that one up themselves. Someone should tell them that the terraces were singing it about Stan Mortensen in 1954 (probably). Furthermore, I learn to me disgust that Athletic Club Bilbao were built by Sunderland fans. In 1987, when Sunderland were the Man United of the day, some English labourers working on factories that were being built, set up the club. Hence the shirts. This is a terrible discovery. I always liked Bilbao because of the romance of the Basque nation and that remarkable language of theirs that has no known root elsewhere and, according to local legend, is the language that God speaks to his angels. Couldn't be further removed from Sunderland.

Don't worry. I have it in hand. Screach has a message to get us both one. Anyway, this is only the third home game I've missed this season. SOB! By the way, I meant 1897 for Athletic Club Bilbao.

I knew that about Athletic Bilbao but is there any truth in what my mate reckons, about Juventus wearing black and white stripes because of us, for some reason?

On the subject of Bilbao.....I know exactly what you mean. I knew they had been founded by Englishmen, having made queries about the lack of an "O" in Athletic. When I found out that the gentlemen in question were Mackems, I had no choice but to start disliking them.

Juve's strip is a direct copy of one of the great clubs of English football..... Notts County
