Way to go, Dr. Corday!

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ER Discussions : One Thread

I was really impressed by Dr. Corday in this last episode, where she got two things absolutely right!

1. Giving the pearls back to Mark. Yes, David Greene gave them to her on his deathbed and she had the right to keep them as a reminder of the relationship they developed (both doctor/patient and personal) before his death. But she was right to give them back for two reasons. One is that she could put herself in Rachel's shoes -- she could see Rachel in a few years wishing she had her grandmother's pearls and being upset that they were given to someone outside the family. The second is that the gift of such an heirloom put a lot of pressure on her -- in terms of her relationship with Mark -- even if that's not what David intended. Much better to give the pearls back and take the relationship as it comes. It will be fun to see that relationship develop in the coming season.

2. Dressing down Dr. Dave. This was looong overdue! And the fact that she did it rather than Kerry or Mark gave it a lot of impact that it mightn't otherwise have had. I mean, have we ever heard her tell someone off like that? If it had been Kerry, Dave could have said, "Oh that's just Kerry on a rampage again" but it was both unusual and entirely appropriate coming from Elizabeth. Good decision on the part of the writers. We finally see Elizabeth exerting some of the authority that her position as assistant head of surgery gives her. I just hope she can be authoritative without descending into bitchy...

I've already said this somewhere else and won't go into the details of why, but I still say Elizabeth was out of line with most of her tirade on Dr. Dave, not because he didn't deserve it, but because Kerry is his supervisor. Obviously she understood that much because she'd been to see Kerry about it when she gave Mark the pearls back. I didn't agree with that either but have stated why on another thread too.

diana, corday is associate chief of surgery. she has the right to know whats going on. dave 100% deserved that stern lecture. he did wrong and should take the blame. he also needs to be more deticated to his work and not so care-free.

i totally agree with you Terra, on both parts. I was glad to see Elizabeth give the pearls back to Mark and suggest that he give them to Rachel. She was right in accepting from DAvid, but if I were in her shoes, I would not have felt comfortable in keeping them and thought she showed alot of class.

I also think she was completely justified in chewing out Dr. Dave...his negligence (along with Abby's) nearly killed a patient and I agree that coming from Elizabeth may be more revealing to Dave than if it came from Kerry. Overall, I think Elizabeth is a very classy lady and I think that she CAN be authoritative without being mean and nasty.

I also felt that Elizabeth is a very dedicated Doctor who always puts her patients care infront of everything else. Remember the kidney transplant/Kovac look a few weeks back? How about everything with Lucy?

bottom line: EC just rocks! (And good for her for telling Dr. Dave off!)

I just hted the way she took the "holyer than thou" attitude with Malucci. I remember her carelessness being the center storyline not too long ago.

I've been lurking around this message board for quite awhile, but haven't gotten around to posting anything until now. I've been a huge ER fan since the early days and personally, I haven't been much of a fan of Dr. Elizabeth Corday since the first day she set foot in the ER. Except for a few brief fleeting moments of respect and admiration for her character (this past Thursday NOT being one of them), I feel she is nothing but dead weight that the show could do without. While I do feel that Malucci was out of line and should have been reprimanded, I thought it poor of the writers to appoint Dr. Corday as the executioner. I seem to recall at least one occasion a while back where Dr. Corday absentmindedly gave a patient a potentially lethal dose medication that almost resulted in tragedy. I believe Weaver would have been the better choice to put Malucci in his place.

IMO, Elizabeth was completely justified in reaming out Malucci. She might not be his supervisor, but she IS his superior in the hospital rankings... AND, she was in the midst of operating on someone who almost died because of Malucci's incompetence as a doctor. Malucci and Abby both deserved their reprimands, not just from their supervisor, but from the surgeon who was directly affected by their screw up.

It's called the "real world." I have certain responsibilites that affect other people's jobs. When I screw up, I'm going to hear it from the manager who my mistake has affected, not just from my supervisor.

Just a correction... Corday didn't "absentmindedly" give the wrong dose of medicine, nor was her "carelessness" a main storyline. The storyline was focused on how in her odd position as an intern who had the full knowledge of a doctor, she was being stretched beyond her limits. No sleep, responsibilities of regular work (surgeries, etc), plus the "scut" work that Dale was piling on her as his intern, and she made a mistake. She was also reprimanded for it, and we saw the fall-out from it at M&M's.
