Capture Dolby Digital from Laserdisc?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

Hello Everyone,

I have been experimenting with XVCD and VCD for a couple of weeks now. My plan is to take my laserdiscs collection and transfer them to either XVCD or maybe even MiniDVD and still keep the Dolby Digital signal from the laserdisc. I have the Live Platinum card from Creative and that card has an SPDIF input, can I use this to record the AC3 signal coming out of my laserdisc player into the computer? My laserdisc player has two outputs, one is a "PCM/AC3-digital" and the other is a "PCM" output. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, you cant get the DD you want. The AC-3 output is an RF modulated output that has to be demodulated into the DD bit stream. Most older recievers and prosessors(WITH an add-on) do this. The other output does not output DD at all. The only thing you can record is the PCM digital Stereo out that should contain Dolby Pro-logic. That is the only surround source you will be able to capture. Even thought your PCM will output DTS. I don't believe you can recourd that either. You might check in to the latter case, but I am positive about DD.
