AOL Users Have Problems Logging on Because of Software Problem

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Some America Online users were unable to sign on to their Internet accounts Wednesday night because of a software problem that lasted for three hours, a company spokesman said.

Describing the problem as "sporadic," Nicholas Graham said it had been fixed by late Wednesday. He said he didn't know how many users had been affected, but the problem lasted from about 9 p.m. to shortly before midnight EDT.

Although AOL said it did not have details, telephone complaints suggested the problem was mostly on the West Coast.

"We're still in the process of diagnosing what has occurred," Graham said. He added that many AOL users had no problems signing on.

Not just on the west coast.I live in NW Missouri and access AOL thru their local access #s in Kansas City. The service was down here last evening around that time-the only access # that would work was the 800 #,and it was SLOW.

Related snafu (?)-This morning when I logged on,MSN Messenger informed me that I had mail in Hotmail. When I tried to read mail, message popped up that the browser could not be found (IE),yet AOL,which runs on IE, works .I dunno.Go figure.

I had the same problem in Seattle last night. Tried all the access numbers and failed to make connection for several hours.

May 10, 2000 10:00 PM PT Spot connection glitch nags AOL Wednesday night

AOL (NYSE: AOL) users reported scattershot luck connecting to the online service Wednesday night. A spokeswoman confirmed the existence of a problem lasting approximately three hours which prevented some users from accessing AOL. "We had a problem where some members couldn't access the service," said the spokeswoman, Trish Primrose. "The problem was sporadic. So for example, I would dial up and then not get on and then try again and get on." Primrose said it was not a service-wide outage. AOL technicians had cleared up the glitch by late evening, east coast time. No further information was immediately available. -- Charles Cooper, ZDNN

We had probs here in East Texas as well. Far from the West Coast. Looks like the prob was nation wide.
