Sony DSC-F505 / USB under Windows2000

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Imaging Resource Discussion : One Thread

Is there someone in the universe who's been able to connect the Sony Cybershot DSC-F505 using USB running Windows2000? I asked Sony about this but the only reply I got was: At this moment there are no Windows 2000 USB drivers available.. geez. what else is new.

I would be very very pleased if someone had a solution to replace the deadly slow serial cable under Windows2000

Thanks in advance,

Since the USB driver for 2000 isn't ready yet, you're screwed! :) I think lexar is coming out with a mem stick card reader, but I doubt that one has drivers for 2000 yet either. If you're running on a laptop somehow, you can use the pcmcia adaptor. I guess there's a floppy reader too, but that also needs drivers I think.

Well, at this time I'm already very happy if I only know they're busy on developing such a driver. The only reason I still have Windows '98 is the Cybershot (I just hate to use slow serial).

But thanks for your reply!

I called Sony two different times, once before the official release of Win2k and once after. The first time I was told that they wouldn't develop a USB driver until the OS was officially released, which seemed pretty stupid to me because other manufacturers were busy getting their drivers ready before the release. The second time I called, I was told that Sony had no drivers for Win2k and had NO PLANS TO DEVELOP ANY! This is so astoundingly stupid of Sony, I had to wonder whether I'd spoken to some idiot who didn't know anything and just gave the first answer that came to mind. Sadly, it seems to be true. I have complained bitterly to Sony about this, but they couldn't care less, I guess, because there aren't enough Win2K systems out there to make it worth Sony's while to take a couple of days and knock out a USB driver. I'll think very hard before I buy a Sony product again. They make a damn good camera, but so do many other companies, and Sony's customer service stinks.

I have heard that the USB driver for W2K will be ready by the end of June. If I find a link I will definitely let you know
